The first highly enantioselective intermolecular Stetter reaction using simple enones is reported. A series of novel chiral BAC structures were designed and prepared. They were tested in the Stetter reaction with simple aldehydes and enones. The products were generated in excellent yields and enantioselectivities (up to 94% ee). Surprisingly, a substoichiometric amount of water was crucial to obtain high enantioselectivities. Chiral BACs were also shown to catalyze 1,6-conjugate addition reactions with paraquinone methides enantioselectively.

A straightforward biocatalytic method for the enzymatic preparation of different flavor esters starting from primary alcohols (e.g., isoamyl, n-hexyl, geranyl, cinnamyl, 2-phenethyl, and benzyl alcohols) and naturally available ethyl esters (e.g., formate, acetate, propionate, and butyrate) was developed. The biotransformations are catalyzed by an acyltransferase from Mycobacterium smegmatis (MsAcT) and proceeded with excellent yields (80-97%) and short reaction times (30-120 min), even when high substrate concentrations (up to 0.5 M) were used. This enzymatic strategy represents an efficient alternative to the application of lipases in organic solvents and a significant improvement compared with already known methods in terms of reduced use of organic solvents, paving the way to sustainable and efficient preparation of natural flavoring agents.

A novel hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite was successfully prepared by utilizing soft mesotemplate by hydrothermal treatment. TPAOH was used as a structure directing agent to create micropores and anionic surfactant HDSS were used to generate additional mesopores in the zeolite framework. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by using XRD, FT-IR,Al-27 and(29)Si NMR, SEM, TEM, NH3-TPD, TGA and N(2)adsorption methods. XRD and FT-IR analysis shows that the synthesized catalyst possesses pronounced crystallinity with characteristics MFI structure. Development of micro/mesoporosity in the samples was noted by SEM and is complementary to TEM and BET analysis. The thermal stability and acidity of the synthesized samples were confirmed by TGA and NH3-TPD technique. Catalytic activity of the synthesized ZSM-5 zeolites was examined for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol in presence of hydrogen peroxide. The results reveal that the surfactant assisted samples offer higher conversion and selectivity compared to conventional zeolites.

This article describes the first synthesis and application of fluorine-18 labelled Ruppert-Prakash reagent [F-18]Me3SiCF3. [F-18]Me3SiCF3 was synthesized from [F-18]fluoroform with radiochemical yields of 85-95% and radiochemical purities of >95% within 20 minutes. We discovered that with the promotion of sulfuryl fluoride, the carbonyl groups of amides performed as nucleophiles while the hydroxyl groups of alcohols were activated to functionalize as electrophiles. Gecko-inspired microfibrillar adhesives have achieved great progress in microstructure design and adhesion improvement over the past two decades. Space applications nowadays show great interest in this material for the characteristics of reversible adhesion and universal van der Waals interactions. However, the impact of harsh environment of space on the performance of microfibrillar adhesives, especially the extreme low temperature, is rarely addressed. Herein, microfibrillar adhesives fabricated by phenyl containing polydimethylsiloxane (p-PDMS) elastomers with superior low-temperature reversible adhesion is proposed. p-PDMS elastomers are synthesized through one-pot anionic ring-opening copolymerization, and the resulting elastomers become non-crystallizable with excellent low-temperature elasticity. Low-temperature adhesion tests demonstrate that the adhesion strength of microfibrillar adhesives fabricated by p-PDMS elastomers can be well maintained to as low as -120 degrees C. In contrast, the adhesion strength of pure PDMS microfibrillar adhesive reduces more than 50% below its crystallization temperature. The low-temperature cyclic adhesion tests further demonstrate that p-PDMS microfibrillar adhesives exhibit superior reversible adhesion compared to that of PDMS microfibrillar adhesives, owing to the sustainable conformal contact and even distribution of loads over repeated cycles. This study provides a new fabrication strategy for microfibrillar adhesives, and is beneficial for the practical application of microfibrillar adhesives.

Recent studies investigating the electrocatalytic properties of nitroxyl radicals (e.g. 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)) for electrochemical alcohol oxidation have demonstrated that the thermodynamic equilibrium oxidation potential and the steric environments unique to each nitroxyl radical have significant implications for their electrocatalytic abilities for alcohol oxidation. However, as the catalytic cycle of the nitroxyl radical involves not only the production and use of the oxoammonium cation for alcohol oxidation but also the regeneration of the oxoammonium cation from the hydroxylamine, the mechanism and rate of the regeneration of the oxoammonium cation critically affect the overall rate of electrochemical nitroxyl radical-mediated alcohol oxidation. Currently, a detailed understanding of this important aspect is lacking. Herein, the factors that affect the regeneration pathways of the oxoammonium cation are systematically investigated, and the impact that the regeneration pathways have on the overall catalytic activity for electrochemical alcohol oxidation is demonstrated. In this study, 4-acetamido TEMPO and 2-azaadamantane-N-oxyl, which are on the opposite ends of the spectrum of nitroxyl radical derivatives in terms of thermodynamic driving force and steric effects, are used as example nitroxyl radicals. As such, the results and discussion provided in this study can be used as comprehensive guidelines to understand the catalytic activity and regeneration pathways of any TEMPO derivative or polycyclic nitroxyl radical during electrochemical alcohol oxidation.

We have designed a versatile reusable cooperative catalyst oxidation system, consisting of palladium nanoparticles and laccase with unprecedented reactivity. This biohybrid catalyst was synthesized by the stepwise immobilization of laccase as an enzyme and Pd as a nanometallic component into the same cavity of siliceous mesocellular foams (MCF). MCF and nanobiohybrid catalyst were characterized by BET, SAXS, SEM, EDX elemental mapping, ICP-OES, TEM, TGA, FT-IR, and XPS techniques and the stepwise immobilization of laccase enzyme and Pd onto MCF was evaluated through several compelling electrochemical studies. The present catalytic system exhibits high activity toward (i) aerobic oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds, (ii) aerobic oxidation of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone to phenol and (iii) aerobic dehydrogenation of important N-heteocyclic compounds (tetrahydro quinazolines, quinazolonones, pyrazolines and 1,4-diydropyridines) in the presence of catalytic amount of hydroquinone (HQ) as mediator in phosphate buffer (0.1 M, pH 4.5, 4 mL)/THF (4%, 1 mL) as solvent under mild conditions. The immobilization of both oxygen-activating catalyst (laccase) and oxidizing catalyst (Pd) onto the same support makes the present catalyst system superior to other currently available heterogeneous palladium based catalytic aerobic oxidation systems.
