The facilitation of redox-neutral reactions by electrochemical injection of holes and electrons, also known as electrochemical catalysis, is a little explored approach that has the potential to expand the scope of electrosynthesis immensely. To systematically improve existing protocols and to pave the way toward new developments, a better understanding of the underlying principles is crucial. In this context, we have studied the Newman-Kwart rearrangement of O-arylthiocarbamates to the corresponding S-aryl derivatives, the key step in the synthesis of thiophenols from the corresponding phenols. This transformation is a particularly useful example because the conventional method requires temperatures up to 300 degrees C, whereas electrochemical catalysis facilitates the reaction at room temperature. A combined experimental-quantum chemical approach revealed several reaction channels and rendered an explanation for the relationship between the structure and reactivity. Furthermore, it is shown how rapid cyclic voltammetry measurements can serve as a tool to predict the feasibility for specific substrates. The study also revealed distinct parallels to photoredox-catalyzed reactions, in which back-electron transfer and chain propagation are competing pathways.

Herein, we report a gold-catalyzed reaction of non-conjugated- haloacetylenes, which leads exclusively to the halogenated cyclization products. Remarkable is the gold-catalyzed reaction of tritylhaloacetylenes to haloindene derivatives, as mechanistic studies reveal that an 1,2-aryl shift occurs in the initially formed gold complex. The potential functionalization at the halogen atom and the wide scope of these cyclization reactions make them an attractive method for the construction of cyclic systems.

Polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) supported CuBr2 hybrid material (CuBr2@g-C3N4) was developed by impregnation of CuBr2 on g-C3N4 sheets. The morphology and physiochemical properties were analyzed by powder XRD, SEM, and HRTEM studies. The hybrid CuBr2@g-C3N4 material showed excellent selectivity in the aerobic oxidation of primary/secondary alcohols and benzoins to the corresponding carbonyl compounds in absence of any oxidizing agents. Further, CuBr2@g-C3N4 demonstrated direct oxidation of toluene derivatives to corresponding aldehydes in excellent yields. The g-C3N4 support provides excellent stability and heterogeneity to CuBr2 and was recovered simply by filtration and reused for ten times without appreciable loss in catalytic activity.

Fe3O4@SiO2@(CH2)(3)-urea-quinoline sulfonic acid chloride, as a novel and efficient nanomagnetic catalyst bearing urea linkers, was designed, synthesized and then fully characterized by using various techniques. To investigate the catalytic activity of the described catalyst, it was used for the synthesis of coumarin containing 1,4-dihydropyridines (DHPs), through a condensation reaction of aromatic aldehydes, 4-hydroxycoumarin, and ammonium acetate under solvent-free conditions. This procedure includes important aspects like simple procedure, simplicity of product isolation using water, decreasing the temperature of reaction, disuse of solvent, high to excellent yields, environmentally benign reaction conditions and short reaction times. Also, the presented catalyst was recycled and reused for at least five times with only a negligible decrease in its catalytic activity. The applied catalyst has both acidic and H-bond donor-acceptor sites so that it can use as a dual role catalytic system. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper describes a very mild, quick and simple protocol for the synthesis of phenols using CuFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles as a catalyst. The nanosized catalyst has an average diameter of 17.63 nm. The magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by SEM, EDX, VSM, XRD and TEM analysis. The synthesis of phenols from phenylboronic acids using H2O2 as an oxidant proceeded very well with excellent yields. Heterogeneous catalyst, easy recyclability, mild reaction conditions, short reaction time added as an advantage for the present protocol.

A highly efficient nitrogen-doped carbon black (NCB)-supported PdBi alloy nanocatalyst has been fabricated via a facile coreduction wet chemical approach. The optimal PdBi/NCB shows outstanding catalytic performance with broad substrate scope, good functional group tolerance towards direct oxidative esterification of alcohols under mild conditions in a heterogeneous catalytic system with air as the sole oxidant. A variety of benzylic and allylic alcohols were smoothly reacted with methanol and even with long-chain aliphatic alcohols, providing desired esters in good to excellent yields. Moreover, the as-prepared catalyst is easily recycled and can be reused at least five times without a significant loss of catalytic activity. Superior catalytic activity is mainly attributable to the unique structure of the catalyst, including synergetic electronic effect between Pd and Bi, as well as modulated surface character by acidification and N doping for better active components’ anchoring and dispersion, as well as reactants’ adsorption. This study provides a facial, practical, eco-friendly and efficient catalytic system for oxidative esterification of alcohols and shows promising prospect in industrial production.

One of the fundamental and highly valuable transformations in organic chemistry is the nucleophilic substitution of alcohols. Traditionally, these reactions require strategies that employ stoichiometric hazardous reagents and are associated with difficulty in purification of the by-products. To overcome these challenges, here, we report a simple route toward the diverse conversion of alcohols via an S(N)2 pathway, in which blue light-promoted iodination is used to form alkyl iodide intermediates from simple unreactive alcohols. The scope of the process tolerates a range of nucleophiles to construct C-N, C-O, C-S, and C-C bonds. Furthermore, we also demonstrate that this method can be used for the preparation and late-stage functionalization of pharmaceuticals, as highlighted by the syntheses of thiocarlide, butoxycaine, and pramoxine.

Leishmaniasis is a neglected parasitic disease, and current treatment includes limitations of toxicity, variable efficacy, high costs and inconvenient doses and treatment schedules. Therefore, new leishmanicidal drugs are still an unquestionable medical need. In this paper we described the design conception of a new framework, the carbamoyl-N-aryl-imine-urea, to obtain putative leishmanicidal drug-candidates. Compounds 9a-e and 10a-e were designed and synthesized and their leishmanicidal activity was studied in comparison to pentamidine, miltefosine and meglumine antimoniate. The conformational profile of the new carbamoyl-N-aryl-imine-urea framework was investigated by X-ray diffraction studies, using compound 9a as a model. The plasma stability of this putative peptide mimetic subunit was studied for compound 10e (LASSBio-1736). Among the congeneric series, LASSBio-1736 was identified as a new antileishmanial drug-candidate, displaying plasma stability, cytotoxicity against amastigote forms of L. amazonensis and L. braziliensis, and leishmanicidal activity in a cutaneous leishmaniasis murine model, without preliminary evidence of hepatic or renal toxicity.

A new set of compounds which are intra-molecularly hydrogen bonded have been synthesized and analyzed with special reference to Resonance Assisted Hydrogen Bonding (RAHB). The structure and stereochemistry of the synthesized compounds (1-10), were established on the basis of their analytical and spectral data (IR, H-1, C-13 NMR, HOMOCOSY, NOESY, HSQC and HMBC). The structure in the solid state for 5, 9 and 10 is clearly established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Spectral and single crystal Xray structural study confirms the flattened boat conformation of the heterocyclic ring which is analyzed with the help of dihedral angles and the mean plane deviations. Hirshfeld surface analysis is carried out and the packing interactions are discussed. The prevalent intramolecular hydrogen bonding is well proved by XRD analysis and the type of hydrogen bonding is classified as S(6), and the resonance assistance for the hydrogen bonding is also quantified and discussed explicitly. Antimicrobial studies were performed for the synthesized compounds against some Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial strains and some fungal strains and the results are summarized.
