High yield 3-hydroxy benzaldehyde-N-methyl 4-stilbazolium tosylate (3-HBST) was synthesized by optimizing the reaction temperature. High-quality bulk crystals of 3-HBST were grown by slow evaporation technique and spontaneous nucleation method, respectively. The crystal structure of 3-HBST was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and belongs to monoclinic system. The defects of the 3-HBST crystals were observed by the synchrotron radiation X-ray topography. 3-HBST crystal remains stable until 305 degrees C, with a melting point of 214.1 degrees C from the TG-DTG and DSC techniques. The dielectric constant of 3-HBST crystal was also studied. The grown crystal had good optical transparency and the optical transmittance was investigated by UV-vis-NIR spectral analysis. Photoluminescence (PL) indicated green emission occurred at 478 nm. Based on the growth technical analysis and performance parameters measurements, 3-HBST crystal was verified to be a promising organic nonlinear optical crystal.

A method for the synthesis of ketones from aldehydes and boronic acids via a transition-metal-free C-H functionalization reaction is reported. The method employs nitrosobenzene as a reagent to drive the simultaneous activation of the boronic acid as a boronate and the activation of the C-H bond of the aldehyde as an iminium species that triggers the key C-C bond-forming step via an intramolecular migration from boron to carbon. These findings constitute a practical, scalable, and operationally straightforward method for the synthesis of ketones.

A versatile Rh(i)-catalyzed C6-selective decarbonylative C-H alkenylation of 2-pyridones with readily available, and inexpensive alkenyl carboxylic acids has been developed. This directed dehydrogenative cross-coupling reaction affords 6-alkenylated 2-pyridones that would otherwise be difficult to access using conventional C-H functionalization protocols. The reaction occurs with high efficiency and is tolerant of a broad range of functional groups. A wide scope of alkenyl carboxylic acids, including challenging conjugated polyene carboxylic acids, are amenable to this transformation and no addition of external oxidant is required. Mechanistic studies revealed that (1) Boc(2)O acts as the activator for the in situ transformation of the carboxylic acids into anhydrides before oxidative addition by the Rh catalyst, (2) a decarbonylation step is involved in the catalytic cycle, and (3) the C-H bond cleavage is likely the turnover-limiting step.

Here, we describe an enantioselective nickel/Lewis acid-catalyzed asymmetric propargylic substitution reaction from simple achiral materials under mild condition. The introduction of a Lewis acid cocatalyst is crucial to the efficiency of the transformation. This study investigates the relationship between the molecular structure of lubricants and the appearance of anomalous film shapes in elastohydrodynamic lubrication conditions. A ball-on-disc type test rig was used, which produced a point contact area between a rotating glass disc and rotating steel ball. Several pure liquids such as alkanes, alcohols, and others with a single polar site were used as lubricants. Linear chain lubricants caused solid-like behaviour in the film formation, traction coefficient and flow out time of entrapped lubricant in shock loading tests whereas complexly shaped lubricants caused liquid-like behaviour. The clear dependence on lubricant type appears to indicate that the anomalous film shapes formed due to the solidification of the lubricant.

Surface stability of deposited sensing material is becoming a crucial issue in the field of opto-chemical sensor technology due to cracks/stresses. Porous silica-titania (ST) nanocomposite coating material is synthesized and doped with CdTe as transducers for sensing cyclic compounds. Ultra-thin coatings are obtained, similar to 11 nm for ST nanocomposite, and 5 nm for encapsulated and heat-treated samples. BET analysis shows large surface area similar to 441 m(2)/g +/- 3 m(2)/g and pore diameter 58 angstrom of ST nanocomposite. It decreases down to similar to 410 m(2)/g +/- 2 m(2)/g, and pore diameter to 24 angstrom, after encapsulation. However, after heat treatment, it again increases up to 419 m(2)/g +/- 2 m(2)/g and pore diameter to 38 angstrom. The sensitivity of 71.37 counts per unit change in the carbon chain with correlation determination coefficient R-2 similar to 0.89 at 468 nm is observed. The prepared sensor device shows excellent stability, signal-to-noise ratio, and good reversibility towards different hydrocarbons and non-hydrocarbons (inorganic materials).

Fangping green tea (FPGT) produced by Zhonghuang 1 (C. sinensis var. sinensis cv. Zhonghuang 1), a new tea variety, has a classical cooked corn-like aroma, which is completely different from the green tea aroma. In order to illustrate the aroma characteristics of the green tea, the volatiles of FPGT was analyzed with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O). The results showed that odor activity value (OAV) of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) was 1195.21 and the odor intensity about DMS was 6.2 in FPGT. Aroma recombination experiment also confirmed the important contribution of DMS to cooked corn-like aroma. Aroma character impact (ACI) values of DMS in tea processed by Zhonghuang 1 and Fudingdabai were 72.01% and 37.86%, respectively. This indicated that the high proportion of DMS was the dominant character of green tea with cooked corn-like aroma. In addition, the S-methylmethionine (SMM) content in fresh leaves of Zhonghuang 1 (0.21 mg/g) was significantly higher than that of Fudingdabai (0.16 mg/g), which was an important reason for high DMS content.

Bimetallic Cu@Ag core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by the reduction of copper 2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]acetate with hydrazine hydrate in benzyl alcohol followed by the reduction of silver ions on the copper surface using a galvanic replacement reaction. Effects of three carp species on texture, color, and aroma properties of Chinese traditional fermented freshwater fish (Suan yu) were investigated. Suan yu were produced from Ctenopharyngodon idella (Grass Carp, GC), Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Silver Carp, SC), and Cyprinus carpio (Common Carp, CC) as the control. GC displayed the highest hardness and resilience, while SC showed the lowest texture except for springiness (p < .05). GC had the greatest L* and Delta E* values but the least a* value (p < .05). Esters (7), alcohols (7), acids (9), aldehydes (8), ketones (1), hydrocarbons (4), and others (5) were identified by GC-MS in all samples. E-nose analysis showed a remarkable difference in the overall aroma profile among all samples. Sensory evaluation and PCA analysis indicated that grass carp could be used as an alternative raw material for Suan yu production, which would improve the utilization of freshwater fish. Practical applications Suan yu is a type of Chinese traditional fermented freshwater fish with a unique flavor, which is popular among consumers. Such products are commonly manufactured from fresh common carp (Cyprinus carpio) with long-term anaerobic fermentation. Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) are popular among consumers as major domesticated fish in China with higher annual harvests than that of common carp, which show potential as raw materials for Suan yu production. It is the first time to investigate the texture, color, and aroma of Suan yu produced from the three carp species (grass carp, silver carp, and common carp) in the same process and to evaluate their quality differences and acceptability.
