In order to develop a novel herbicide containing the beta-triketone motif, a series of 4-hydroxyl-3-(2-phenoxyacetyl)-pyran-2-one derivatives were designed and synthesized. The bioassay results showed that compound II15 had good pre-emergent herbicidal activity even at a dosage of 187.5 g ha(-1). Moreover, compound II15 showed a broader spectrum of weed control when compared with a commercial herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), and displayed good crop safety to Triticum aestivum L. and Zea mays Linn. when applied at 375 g ha(-1) under pre-emergence conditions, which indicated its great potential as a herbicide. More importantly, studying the molecular mode of action of compound II15 revealed that the novel triketone structure is a proherbicide of its corresponding phenoxyacetic acid auxin herbicide, which has a herbicidal mechanism similar to that of 2,4-D. The present work indicates that the 4-hydroxyl-3-(2-phenoxyacetyl)-pyran-2-one motif may be a potential lead structure for further development of novel auxin-type herbicides.

Two magnetic nano catalysts of nickel and copper, Fe3O4@SiO2@DOP-BenPyr-M(II), (M=Ni and Cu) have been synthesized. These catalysts were applied as recoverable, efficient and new heterogeneous catalysts for the high yielding and room temperature one-pot procedure of selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides and oxidative coupling of thiols to disulfides. In addition, the catalytic activity of Fe3O4@SiO2@DOP-BenPyr-Ni(II) was investigated as heterogeneous nanocatalyst for synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones, 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles and polyhydroquinolines. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by FT-IR, TGA, XRD, VSM, EDX, ICP and SEM techniques. A conformationally restricted perhydro-1,3-benzoxazine derived from (-)-8-aminomenthol behaves as a good chiral ligand in the dimethylzinc-mediated enantioselective monoaddition of aromatic and aliphatic terminal alkynes to 1,2-diketones. The corresponding alpha-hydroxyketones were obtained in good yields with high enantioselectivities starting from both aromatic and aliphatic 1,2-diketones. The alkynylation of unsymmetrical 1,2-diketones with electronically different substituents also proceeds with high regio- and enantioselectivity. The chalcone derivative with a naphthalene unit, (E)-1-(4-hydroxypheny1)-3-(naphthalen-2-yl)-prop-2-en-1-one was synthesized using the Claisen Schmidt condensation reaction method. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n, with cell parameters a = 8.7203 (14) angstrom, b = 12.5568 (19) angstrom, c = 12.9667 (19) angstrom, alpha = 90, beta = 104.272 (4), gamma = 90 and V = 1376.0 (4) angstrom(3). The UV-Vis spectrum of the title compound and three more chalcone derivatives whose structures were already reported by the same group of authors, show that the crystals are transparent in the entire visible region. Molecular parameters were calculated using MOPAC 2016. The static first order hyperpolarizability of all the four compounds are found to be greater than that of urea indicating that all the compounds are NLO active and suitable for optical tuning applications. Lignin, as a byproduct from the paper industry and biorefineries, has been used as a renewable alternative to the conventional catalyst for future industrial application. However, due to the complex structure of lignin, its application has been considerably restricted. Herein, three types of lignin (soda lignin, kraft lignin, and enzymatic hydrolysis lignin) were prepared to illuminate the real impact of lignin interunit linkages and types of hydroxyl groups on the catalytic activity of cycloaddition reaction. Among these lignin/cocatalyst systems, a soda lignin/KI system showed excellent catalytic performance for the cycloaddition reaction at a low KI loading of 0.33 mol % (TON = 273). Particularly, soda lignin with abundant beta-O-4′ linkages, higher aliphatic C-a-OH groups, and phenolic hydroxyl groups as well as enriched carboxylic-OH groups could activate epoxides more efficiently and furthermore accelerate the cycloaddition reaction. Moreover, the dimeric intermolecular hydrogen bonding was dominant in soda lignin, which could also account for the higher catalytic activity of cycloaddition reaction. This work highlights the application of the soda lignin in a cycloaddition reaction and opens a new way for the utilization of lignin.

A set of heteropolyacid-based ionic heterogeneous catalysts (PW@IL-GO(m)) have been synthesized by intercalated heteropolyanions in ionic liquid (IL)-functionalized graphene oxide (GO) via amino-protonation and/or anion-exchange reaction. This immobilization method offered improved dispersity, accessibility and stability of active sites. The amphipathic nature of IL-GO sheets and porosity of PW@IL-GO(m) are beneficial to reducing mass transfer limitation in a water/organic substrate two-phase system. Then, these obtained hybrids were employed as efficient and robust catalysts for the selective oxidation of alcohols into carbonyl compounds using hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant under organic solvent-free condition. As expected, PW@IL-GO(m) catalysts showed even much better activity than the corresponding homogeneous HPW (phosphotungstic acid) catalyst. Particularly, PW@IL-GO(1.5) gave a benzyl alcohol conversion of 94% and benzaldehyde chemoselectivity of 91%. Moreover, owing to the heterogeneous nature and strong cation-anion interactions between cationic supporter and PW anions, the as-prepared catalyst presented advantages of convenient recovery, simple preparation and steady reuse, further providing the industrial application potential in sustainable oxidation reactions.

The synthesis of the hexasaccharide fragment of landomycin A is reported. Using p-toluenesulfonyl chloride mediated dehydrative glycosylation, we constructed the deoxy-sugar linkages in a stereoselective fashion without the need for temporary prosthetic groups to control selectivity. The ligand activated transcription factor, aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) emerged as a critical regulator of immune and metabolic processes in the gastrointestinal tract. In the gut, a main source of AhR ligands derives from commensal bacteria. However, many of the reported microbiotaderived ligands have been restricted to indolyl metabolites. Here, by screening commensal bacteria supernatants on an AhR reporter system expressed in human intestinal epithelial cell line (IEC), we found that the short chain fatty acid (SCFA) butyrate induced AhR activity and the transcription of AhRdependent genes in IECs. We showed that AhR ligand antagonists reduced the effects of butyrate on IEC suggesting that butyrate could act as a ligand of AhR, which was supported by the nuclear translocation of AhR induced by butyrate and in silico structural modelling. In conclusion, our findings suggest that (i) butyrate activates AhR pathway and AhR-dependent genes in human intestinal epithelial cell-lines (ii) butyrate is a potential ligand for AhR which is an original mechanism of gene regulation by SCFA.

Presented here is a highly efficient procedure for the selective hydrogenation of aldehydes in the presence of ketones and its application in equilibrium displacement in a one-enzyme procedure catalysed by.-transaminase. A palladium-based heterogeneous catalyst was chemically synthesized from K2PdCl4 and 1,1′-binaphthyl-2,2′-ylenediamine and found to be suitable for selective hydrogenation of aldehydes using H2 of 1 atm, with a wide spectrum of aldehydes being efficiently and selectively reduced to the corresponding alcohols with a selectivity of up to 99%. This catalyst and its developed procedure can be successfully applied in pushing the equilibrium to product formation during transamination in a.-transaminase-promoted one-enzyme procedure via hydrogenation of the co-product, and an array of chiral amines was afforded in good to excellent yields of up to 99% with ees of up to > 99%.
