The synthesis of valuable organic compounds from naturally available and renewable biomass is an open field of research towards adaptation in real-life applications. Photocatalytic valorization is assumed as a potential candidate, although the lower efficiency of the traditional batch photocatalytic reactor sets some drawbacks. Recently, photocatalytic microreactors revealed as a prosperous candidate for various photocatalytic reactions, especially for selective oxidation. This area of research is challenging due to the development of the proper photocatalytic microreactor for the targeted application. Deposition of the catalyst on the internal surface of the microreactor, the sufficient utilization of the irradiation, optimization of the reaction parameters are among the most vital parameters that should be considered upon the design. Although, to obtain the most active material and tune its crucial features to maximize its catalytic performance inside the microreactors is the uppermost important part. This work introduces ultrasound-assisted TiO2 deposition on the inner walls of a perfluoroalkoxyalkane microtube under mild conditions. The deposition experiments were carried out with commercial and sol-gel synthesized TiO2. The materials were characterized by XRD, UV-vis DRS, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and nitrogen sorption. The photocatalytic activities of the TiO2 nano-engineered fluoropolymer based microreactors were evaluated for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol in flow.

The solubility of pidotimod was measured by employing a dynamic equilibrium method in nine pure solvents [water, methanol, benzyl alcohol, ethanol, acetone, iso-propanol, n-butanol, acetonitrile, and N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF)] and two binary solvents (methanol + acetone and methanol + butyl acetate) from 278.15 to 323.15 K, and mole fraction solubility of pidotimod increased with increasing measured temperature in all systems under atmospheric pressure. The mole fraction solubility of pidotimod in pure solvents is the highest in DMF and lowest in acetone. For the methanol + acetone binary solvent system, the solubility of pidotimod at the same temperature is higher than that in their neat solvents. In methanol + butyl acetate binary solvents, the solubility decreased with the increasing concentration of butyl acetate. The experimental solubility of pidotimod in the pure solvents was correlated with the Apelblat, Wilson, and NRTL models; it showed that the models agreed well with experimental data. Good correlation was also obtained by Wilson, NRTL, and CNIBS/R-K models for binary solvents. The solute-solvent interactions in the pure solvents were investigated according to the linear solvation energy relationship using multiple linear regression analysis.

Insects use their olfactory systems to obtain chemical information on mating partners, oviposition sites and food. The yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti, an important vector of human infectious diseases, shows strong preference for human blood meals. This study investigated the chemical basis of host detection by characterizing the neuronal responses of antenna! olfactory sensilla of female Ae. aegypti to 103 compounds from human skin emanations. The effect of blood feeding on the responses of olfactory sensilla to these odorants was examined as well. Sensilla SBTII, GP, and three functional subtypes of SST (SST1, SST2, and SST3) responded to most of the compounds tested. Olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) ‘A’ and ‘B’ in the trichoid sensilla, either activated or inhibited, were involved in the odour coding process. Compounds from different chemical classes elicited responses with different temporal structures and different response patterns across the olfactory sensilla. Except for their increased responses to several odorants, blood-fed mosquitoes generally evoked reduced responses to specific aldehydes, alcohols, aliphatics/aromatics, ketones, and amines through the SST1, SST2, SBTI, SBTII and GP sensilla. The odorants eliciting diminished responses in female mosquitoes after blood feeding may be important in Ae. aegypti host-seeking activity and thus can be candidates for mosquito attractants in the process of this disease vector management.

We have developed a metal-free, mild, and green synthetic route toward benzothieno[3,2-b]benzofurans by the annulation of 3-nitrobenzothiophene with phenols. The reaction was found to be general with a range of substituted phenols. In addition, we could extend the methodology for the synthesis of pentacenes and could demonstrate the synthesis in gram-scale. In this approach, low-dimensional silver oxide decorated carbon black nanocomposites (Ag2O/CB NCs) were synthesized by a facile wet-chemical process at low temperature. The prepared composites were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV/vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). A thin layer of Ag2O/CB NC was deposited on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with a conducting binder to produce the working electrode of a chemical sensor. The fabricated chemical sensor was used for the successive in vitro detection of 3-methoxyphenol (3-MP) by an electrochemical method at a lower applied potential. The sensor response towards 3-MP is linear in a logarithmic scale over a large concentration range (0.09 nM to 9.0 mu M). The analytical parameters of the sensor, including good sensitivity (45.7278 mu A mu M-1 cm(-2)), low detection limit (LOD = 9.73 +/- 0.49 pM at a signal to noise ratio of 3), good reliability, good reproducibility, and long-term stability were examined. Therefore, the proposed chemical sensor based on Ag2O/CB NCs/binder/GCE may be a promising sensitive chemical sensor in reliable electrochemical approaches for the broad-scale detection of hazardous and carcinogenic chemicals in the health care and environmental sectors.

The resolution of samples containing unknown compounds of different nature, or without standards available, as is the case of chromatographic fingerprints, is still a challenge. Possibly, the most problematic aspect that prevents systematic method development is finding models that describe without bias the retention behaviour of the compounds in the samples. In this work, the use of global models (able to describe the whole sample) is proposed as an alternative to the use of individual models for each solute. Global models contain parameters that are specific for each solute, while other parameters -related to the column and solvent- are common for all solutes. A special regression procedure is presented for the construction of global models, which are applied to predict highly complex chromatograms, such as chromatographic fingerprints, for diverse experimental conditions in isocratic and gradient elution. Another interesting application is the prediction of molecular properties, such as log P-o/w from the specific solute parameters of the global models. The examined adapted models are based on the equations proposed by Snyder, Schoenmakers, Neue and Kuss, Jandera, and Bosch Roses to describe the retention. In all cases, the predictive capability was very satisfactory. Two cases of study were considered: chromatograms of camomile extracts analysed using acetonitrile gradients, and a set of 145 known compounds in a wide range of structures and functionalities, eluted isocratically with acetonitrile/water mobile phases.
