A new effective approach to synthesize a series of 7-aryl-6H,7H-[1]benzopyrano[4,3-b][1,3]dioxolo[4,5-g][1]benzopyran-6-ones was reported using Fe3O4@SiO2@Kit-6 as heterogeneous catalyst at room temperature under ultrasonic irradiation in aqueous media. Since 30 years, liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) have been attracting the attention of many researchers thanks to their anisotropic molecular structure which allows them to build up artificial muscles. Possible applications span from soft robotics to biomedical or tunable optical devices. The power of thiol-yne click chemistry was recently demonstrated in the preparation of smart polymers, in particular LCEs, in which the mesogenic units are incorporated both in the main-chain and as pendant groups. To enrich the library of available LCE materials, in this work, several liquid crystalline dithiols and alkynes have been synthesized and copolymerized to obtain elastomers with different thermomechanical properties. The architecture of the main chain was found to play a prominent role in modulating the clearing point in a range of 60 degrees C, whereas only a minor contribution is given by the mesogens in the side chain. On the other hand, the mechanical response resulted highly sensitive to fine details of the side-chain structure. Accordingly, the present study not only improves the basic understanding of the chemical-physical properties of LCEs but paves the way to the preparation of multicomponent actuators able to deform in different temperature ranges, thus ultimately leading to complex soft robotic operations.

TiO2 photocatalysis and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation can exhibit a good performance in ultraviolet light but a less activity in visible light (VL). Herein, the TiO2 nano-tubes arrays (TiO2NTAs) and PMS were combined to degrade bisphenol A (BPA) under VL irradiation. Surprisingly, about 94.6% of BPA was removed in TiO2 NTAs/PMS/VL system within 30 min, which was much higher than that of TiO2 NTAs/VL (20.1%) and PMS/VL (9.4%) systems. A series of spectroscopic characterizations and photoelectrochemical measurements confirmed the formation of PMS-TiO2 complex with VL response, which can be excited by VL to transfer electrons to the conduction band (CB) of TiO2 for activating PMS. The quenching tests and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra indicated that SO4 center dot- and center dot OH were responsible for BPA degradation, and then the possible degradation pathways of BPA were proposed. Humic acid (HA) and chloride ions (Cl-) significantly enhanced the BPA degradation, while bicarbonate (HCO3-) and phosphate (H2PO4-) exhibited an inhibition effect. Moreover, TiO2 NTAs/PMS/VL system displayed an enhanced BPA degradation in tap water and drinking water compared with deionized water, and as an immobilization catalyst which fabricated on Ti plate, TiO2 NTAs exhibited excellent stability and separability without complex catalyst separation/recovery processes. We believe this work will provide a new insight of the VL-induced photocatalytic PMS activation in practical water treatment.

The first example of room temperature non-noble metal homogeneous system catalyzed selective N-alkylation of anilines with alcohols by a bis-NHC manganese complex is presented. A remote delta methylene C(sp(3))-H functionalization catalyzed by an organophosphine through an alkyne isomerization/conjugate addition cascade was discovered. No classical electron-withdrawing group is required to pre-activate the aryl alkyne, which will undergo isomerization to its corresponding diene under only 10 mol% of PMe2Ph with a catalytic proton shuttle. The phosphoryl ylide was postulated as a key intermediate and different electrophiles were used to trap the vinylogous ylide that resulted in a large group of delta C(sp(3))-H functionalized products (>60 examples, yields up to 99%) with good diastereoselectivity. Mechanistic studies were carried out and a catalytic cycle was proposed based on deuterium-labeling experiments. The conjugated polyene products were investigated for their fluorescence properties.

Polydopamine/MIL-53(Fe) (PDA/MIL-53(Fe)) nanocomposite photocatalysts were synthesized with PDA (PDA = polydopamine) and MIL-53(Fe) using a nature-mimicking method. The structures, morphologies, optical properties and thermal stabilities of all the synthesized materials were characterized using a series of methods. In particular, the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge significantly increased after the incorporation of PDA into MIL-53(Fe), which resulted in an elevated photocatalytic activity of PDA/MIL-53(Fe) compared with the control groups. The PDA/MIL-53(Fe) nanocomposite could accelerate the conversion of primary or secondary alcohols into the corresponding aldehydes or ketones with a high specificity by direct hole-involving oxidation under visible-light irradiation and room temperature. The catalysts could be cycled at least three times without a significant decrease in the catalytic activity and this result showed the excellent recyclability and stability of the catalysts.

Nucleophilic addition to the oxy-allyl cation intermediate has emerged as a promising methodology for functionalization of the alpha-position of carbonyl compounds in an umpolung fashion. However, a structure of available carbon nucleophiles to trap the catalytically generated oxy-allyl cation has been limited to highly nucleophilic ones.
