Silver nanoparticles were fabricated in the presence and absence of light with silver nitrate and aqueous extract of Prunus cerasifera leaf via facile and one-pot green method. P. cerasifera leaf extract reduced and stabilized the nanoparticles with phytometabolites expunging the need for addition of external reducing agents. Optimized silver nanoparticle syntheses was done with variations in leaf extract concentration, time, temperature, and molarity for deciphering the photocatalytic, antifungal, and antibacterial potential of synthesized nanoparticles. Optical, compositional, and morphological analyses of the synthesized nanoparticles were done by UV-visible spectrometry (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Formation of silver nanoparticles was confirmed firstly through UV-Vis by exhibition of peaks with 400-450 nm. FTIR confirmed the presence of major organic groups responsible for reduction of nanoparticles. AFM confirmed the spherical morphology of the synthesized nanoparticles with remarkable dispersion without any agglomeration. Phytochemical analysis for P. cerasifera leaf metabolites was done by GC-MS. Spherical nanoparticles having a size range of 57-144 nm were obtained with face-centered cubic crystals. The average crystallite size obtained from XRD spectra was 2.34 nm. Enhanced photocatalytic first-order kinetics were obtained for persistent organic pollutants, i.e., crystal violet, methylene blue, and malachite green (R-2 = 0.99, 0.99, 0.98) in less than 15 min. Biomedical and agricultural significance as an antibiotic drug and utilization as a fungicides substitute was explored against nine resistant microbes. Statistically significant variations were analyzed via one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Kruskal-Wallis test and specific multi comparison tests. Active to highly active inhibition zones manifested the use of biogenic silver nanoparticles as potential candidate for applications in biological arenas and as environmental remediators.

Phenols from various man-made activities pose threats to public health and aquatic ecosystems. A number of technologies (e.g., adsorption, oxidation, and biological methods) have been proposed and tested to remove phenolic compounds from different sources. Among these technologies, oxidation process is considered one of the most efficient tools for abating phenolic compounds because of low cost, easy scalability, and ecofriendly production. In this work, we aim to synthesize and characterize potential catalysts (Co(II) and Cu(II) phthalocyanines 6 and 7) for phenolic compounds oxidation. Different parameters influenced the oxidation process were determined and phenolic compounds oxidize to the less harmful products with high conversion and yield in the presence of Co(II) and Cu(II) phthalocyanine catalysts. Turbidity and opaqueness are inherent properties of tissues that limit the capacity to acquire microscopic images through large tissues. Creating a uniform refractive index, known as tissue clearing, overcomes most of these issues. These methods have enabled researchers to image large and complex 3D structures with unprecedented depth and resolution. However, tissue clearing has been adopted to a limited extent due to a combination of cost, time, complexity of existing methods and potential negative impact on fluorescence signal. Here, we describe 2Eci (2nd generation ethyl cinnamate-based clearing), which can be used to clear a wide range of tissues in several species, including human organoids, Drosophila melanogaster, zebrafish, axolotl and Xenopus laevis, in as little as 1-5 days, while preserving a broad range of fluorescent proteins, including GFP, mCherry, Brainbow and Alexa-conjugated fluorophores. Ethyl cinnamate is non-toxic and can easily be used in multi-user microscope facilities. This method opens up tissue clearing to a much broader group of researchers due to its ease of use, the non-toxic nature of ethyl cinnamate and broad applicability.

Drug resistance is a multifactorial phenomenon that limits the action of antibiotics and chemotherapeutics. Therefore, it is essential to develop new therapeutic strategies capable of inducing cytotoxic effects circumventing chemoresistance. In this regard, the employment of natural and synthetic cationic peptides and polymers has given satisfactory results both in microbiology, as antibacterial agents, but also in the oncological field, resulting in effective treatment against several tumors, including neuroblastoma (NB). To this end, two polystyrene-based copolymers (P5, P7), containing primary ammonium groups, were herein synthetized and tested on etoposide-sensitive (HTLA-230) and etoposide-resistant (HTLA-ER) NB cells. Both copolymers were water-soluble and showed a positive surface charge due to nitrogen atoms, which resulted in protonation in the whole physiological pH range. Furthermore, P5 and P7 exhibited stability in solution, excellent buffer capacity, and nanosized particles, and they were able to reduce NB cell viability in a concentration-dependent way. Interestingly, a significant increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was observed in both NB cell populations treated with P5 or P7, establishing for both copolymers an unequivocal correlation between cytotoxicity and ROS generation. Therefore, P5 and P7 could be promising template macromolecules for the development of new chemotherapeutic agents able to fight NB chemoresistance.

Pyrolysis processes are an alternative to minimize the environmental problem associated to agrifood industrial wastes. The main product resulting from these processes is a high-value liquid product, called bio-oil. Recently, the use of comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography (LC x LC) has been demonstrated as a useful tool to improve the characterization of the water-soluble phases of bio-oils, considering their complexity and high water content. However, the precise composition of bio-oils from different agrifood byproducts is still unknown. In the present study, the qualitative and quantitative screening of eight aqueous phases from different biomasses, not yet reported in the literature, using LC x LC is presented. The two-dimensional approach was based on the use of two reverse phase separations. An amide column in the first dimension together with a C18 column in the second dimension were employed. Thanks to the use of diode array and mass spectrometry detection, 28 compounds were identified and quantified in the aqueous phase samples with good figures of merit. Samples showed a distinct quali-quantitative composition and a great predominance of compounds belonging to aldehydes, ketones and phenols, most of them with high polarity.

In this manuscript, we investigated in detail one of the critical parameters that govern the reactivity of the carbonylic group toward hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation: the effect of the side chains of aldehydes. We observed that the presence of a pi-electron conjugation on the side chains strongly affects the conversion of aldehydes to alcohols and hydrocarbons under the reaction conditions studied. In particular, the presence of a strong pi-electron conjugation, such as the aromatic ring, enables the hydrogenation and further hydrodeoxygenation of the carbonylic group, while, on the other hand, molecules with no or weak pi-electron conjugation (such as alkyl chains or single conjugated C = C double bonds) remained inactive. These results were supported by adsorption analyses as well as theoretical models, which showed that differences in adsorption mode and strength between two model substrates (benzaldehyde and octanal) were not the decisive factors in the conversion of the carbonyl group. Background: The pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole derivatives are important building blocks of many biologically active compounds owing to their diverse biological potential for example, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, anti-microbial and anti-oxidant properties. Objective: Keeping in mind the wide range of applications of pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazoles, herein we intended to develop a novel synthetic methodology for dihydropyranopyrazoles. We were also interested in determining the influence of amino acids and dipeptides as a catalyst on the synthesis of pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole derivatives. Methods: To achieve our objectives, we used a one-pot multi-component reaction of ethyl 3-oxobutanoate, propanedinitrile, hydrazine monohydrate and several substituted benzaldehydes by using different catalysts and solvents to synthesize our desired products in the presence of various catalysts. Results and discussion: We found that optimal conditions for the preparation of pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazoles were L-cysteine (0.5 mol) in the presence of water:ethanol (9:1) at 90 degrees C. Various 1,4-dihydropyrano[2,3-c]pyrazoles were afforded by using several substituted benzaldehydes in 66-97% yields. Conclusion: We described a green and environmentally benign method to synthesize pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazoles in a one-pot four component reaction of ethyl 3-oxobutanoate, propanedinitrile, hydrazine monohydrate and different substituted benzaldehyde in the presence of L-cysteine in aqueous ethanol (9:1) at 90 degrees C. Excellent yields of the products, simple work-up, easily available starting materials, use of green solvents, naturally occurring catalyst, non-toxicity, non-chromatographic purification and environmentally benign reaction conditions are some main advantages of this protocol.

To improve the fractionation efficiency of lignins from Miscanthus x giganteus in the neutral DES (choline chloride/glycerol), three heteropoly acids with environmental origin and economic viability (phosphotungstic, phosphomolybdic, and silicotungstic acids) were utilized as catalysts. It was found that the silicotungstic acid-choline chloride/glycerol system resulted in a high lignin yield of 78.2% under mild conditions (120 degrees C, 3 h). This was attributed to silicotungstic acid acting as tetrahydric acid, which donated more active protons to selectively cleave ether bonds and further facilitated lignin removal. The lose following lignin profiling indicated that the recovered lignin had a high purity (92.7%), low molecular weight (M-w 1520-2470 g/mol), low polydispersity (PDI < 1.7), excellent thermal stability, and good solubility in dimethyl sulfoxide and dimethylacetamide. Additionally, phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) lignin exhibited a typical structure of HGS with a relatively higher O/C ratio due to more nativelike C-O-bonded structures (high beta-aryl ether content) after treatment. Interestingly, nanoscaled lignin was defined in the DES fractionation procedure based on the SEM and TEM analyses. To further evaluate the potential application of the isolated lignin streams, the antioxidant activity was performed by in vitro 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability. The antioxidant performance (IC50 = 0.042 mg/mL) was better than that of the commercial antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (IC50 = 0.056 mg/mL). The above results demonstrated that the heteropoly acids-neutral DES system was significantly efficient for lignin extraction and provided a new source of lignin with good antioxidant activity. Phenols are common precursors and core structures of a variety of industrial chemicals ranging from pharmaceuticals to polymers. However, the synthesis of site-specifically substituted phenols is challenging, and thus the development of new methods for this purpose would be highly desirable. Reported here is a protocol for palladium-catalyzed ortho-selective alkylation reactions of phenols with primary alcohols by a dearomatization-rearomatization strategy, with water as the sole by-product. Various substituted phenols and primary alcohols were compatible with the standard reaction conditions. The detailed mechanism of this transformation was also investigated.
