A Cd(II) coordination polymer based on a polytopic compartmental ligand was synthesized, and used as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the Knoevenagel reaction between benzaldehyde and malononitrile under mild reaction conditions. The solid catalyst was characterized using single crystal XRD, X-ray powder diffraction, SEM, TGA, UV diffuse reflectance, infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The compound is a two-dimensional (2D) MOF with a grid structure. Topological analysis of the framework revealed that it is a 2,4-connected binodal net. The catalytic activity was tested between various benzaldehydes containing different substituents with malononitrile. The effect of reaction parameters such as solvent, time, reactant ratio and catalyst amount was investigated. Furthermore, the catalyst stability was examined through reusability experiments and it is observed that the catalyst can be recycled at least five times without significant drop in its activity.

Here, we report the reaction between N-phenyl-o-phenylenediamine and pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde to afford the N-phenyl-o-phenyl-enediiminopyrrole ligand {L-H2} in quantitative yield. A one-pot reaction between {L-H2} and diethylzinc (ZnEt2) in a 2:1 ratio afforded the homoleptic zinc metal complex [{L-H}(2)Zn] (1). The solid-state structures of ligand {L-H2} and zinc complex 1 were confirmed using X-ray crystallography. Further, complex 1 was used for chemoselective hydroboration of aldehydes and ketones in the presence of pinacolborane (HBpin) at ambient temperature to produce the corresponding boronate esters in high yield.

An efficient silver-catalyzed para-selective amination and aminative dearomatization of phenols with azodicarboxylates was developed. It afforded the para-aminophenols or amino cyclohexadieneones from free phenols depending on whether it has a para-substituent. The reactions of 3-benzyl-1,5-ditosyl-1,3,5-triazapentane (1) and 3-benzyl-1,5-dimesityl-1,3,5-triazapentane (2) with one equivalent of Lappert’s germylene or stannylene (M[N(SiMe3)(2)](2), where M = Ge, Sn) produced germylenes and stannylenes of the general formula PhCH2N(CH2CH2NR)(2)M, where M = Ge, R = 4-MeC6H4SO2- (3); 2,4,6-Me3C6H2- (5); M = Sn, R = 4-MeC6H4SO2- (4); 2,4,6-Me3C6H2- (6), in satisfactory yields. Phosphite-based Au(i) catalytic systems containing an array of structurally diverse polyether-based regulation sites were designed and synthesised. These catalysts have been successfully tested in the Au(i)-catalysed C-H functionalisation of phenols and related derivatives with gold-carbenes derived from diazo compounds. Regulation of the steric congestion around the catalytic Au(i) centreviaion-dipole interactions with an external regulation agent led to an enhancement of both the activity and selectivity of the reaction. This new approach in supramolecular gold(i) catalysis has been applied to the derivatisation of an array of substituted phenols and related substrates and to the preparation of an advanced synthetic intermediate of the anticancer agent tamoxifen. The morphology and crystal-plane effects of CeO2 materials (nanorods, octahedra, cubes, and particles) in gas-phase selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol were investigated. HRTEM, XPS and TPR analyses showed that CeO2 nanorods enclosed by {110} and {100} facets are richer in oxygen vacancies than nanocubes, octahedra and nanoparticles. Their catalytic activity towards the gas-phase selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol, however, followed the order nanorods > nanoparticles nano-octahedra > nanocubes, which was not fully consistent with the content of oxygen vacancies. Further characterization together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the exposed crystal planes can not only determine the content of oxygen vacancies, but also influence the ability to abstract H, adsorb O2 and remove water. The combination of all these factors leads to a collective crystal-plane effect of ceria, and these results can help deepen our understanding of ceria surface chemistry.

An urgent yet challenging task is to overcome the limitations in substrate scope and regio- and chemoselectivity in the oxidative couplings between two arenes for the construction of unsymmetrical 2,2′-difunctional biaryls with diverse application requirements. In this work, a co-oxidant-free Rh(I)/Zn(NTf2)(2)/air catalytic system has been developed for dual chelation-assisted oxidative C-H/C-H cross-couplings between two anilines, between two phenols, and between phenols and anilines, which enables rapid assembly of rich libraries of 2,2′-bianilines, 2,2′-biphenols, and 2′-aminobiphenyl-2-ols. This protocol features air as the sole oxidant, complete regioselectivity, high chemoselectivity, low molar ratio of substrates (even 1:1), convenient operation, and scale-up synthesis. The established catalytic system is tolerant of the substrates having both electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents at different positions of the aryl ring. This work further discloses that the chemoselectivity of cross-coupling over homocoupling mainly relies on a suitable combination of two directing groups (i.e., a pair of strongly and weakly coordinating directing groups) rather than the electronically distinct properties between two substrates, which provides an inspiration for designing the matching directing group pair for the dual chelation-assisted oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H cross-couplings. Thus, this strategy allows the highly chemoselective cross-coupling between electronically similar coupling partners, which represents a challenging task in the oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H cross-coupling reactions.

This study presents the fire resistance results of incorporating nano-sized alumina in boron nitride reinforced epoxy-based intumescent fire-retardant coating. Structural steel substrates were coated with the developed coating and exposed at 800 degrees C for 2 h for furnace fire test to examine the char expansion and morphology. The fire-resistance of the coating was tested by heating the coated substrates using a Bunsen burner for 1 h. The coated substrates were tested for water absorption followed by a fire-resistance test. The furnace fire test showed that boron nitride-alumina (BNA-1) reinforced with 0.1 wt% of nano-sized alumina resulted in 45% higher char compared to boron nitride-alumina reinforced with 0.4 wt% (BNA-4) and boron nitride-alumina reinforced with 0.5 wt% (BNA-5). The increased amount of alumina improved the mass of the char. The lowest substrate temperature of 137 degrees C was recorded by BNA-5 with a maximum char mass of 43.89 wt%. This was considered due to formation of aluminum oxide and aluminum phosphate on the char surface, reduced char pore size, and increased amount of alumina in the gas emission. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis found boron phosphate, boron nitride, and phosphoric nitride compounds were reliable in protecting the substrate at high temperature. The functional groups of char compounds were observed by FTIR. FESEM micrographs showed the presence of nanosized alumina. XPS results also suggest that nano-alumina may react with boron nitride and ammonium polyphosphate additives, producing aluminium nitride, boron oxide, and aluminium phosphate that are beneficial to the intumescent process and fire-resistant performance. Pyrolysis GC-MS results showed reduced emission of gaseous product in BNA-5. This concluded that the addition of 0.5 wt% alumina in BNA improved char morphology and increased char mass. No changes in the microstructure and hardness of the substrate were observed after the fire test. The fire resistance of the water-immersed samples showed a small increase in substrate temperature which was within the acceptable range for structural safety.
