A multiblock copolymer with increased charge density in the hydrophilic phase was synthesized by utilizing a trisulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) backbone (SHQS100). To achieve a balance of membrane properties a partially fluorinated poly(arylene ether benzonitrile) hydrophobic phase (6FPAEB) was used in uneven block lengths to form the hydrophilic-hydrophobic multiblock copolymer. Multiblock copolymers were synthesized via nucleophilic aromatic substitution to achieve high molecular weight copolymers and corresponding ductile membranes. Combination of the shorter increased charge density hydrophilic phase and longer partially fluorinated hydrophobic phase resulted in superior proton conductivity and mechanical properties while limiting water uptake and swelling, despite high ion-exchange capacity. The trifunctional SHQSH hydrophilic phase is proposed to produce a more concentrated charge region in the hydrophilic phase, while swelling of the membrane was limited by a longer partially fluorinated hydrophobic phase.

Historical stringed musical instruments are a unique class of cultural heritage objects. Crafted during the 16th-18th centuries, these instruments remain somewhat mysterious. Due to the absence of written historical documents of traditional varnish recipes, their chemical characterization is the only way to recover the lost ‘secret’ of the Cremonese stringed instrument maker Antonio Stradivari and his contemporaries, whose traditions had been lost by 1800. Pyrolysis combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) followed by on-fiber silylation (Py SPME Syl GC-MS) was applied to a large collection of standards to evaluate its validity for compositional analysis and material identification of historical stringed instrument varnishes. The standards included pure resins (colophony, amber, mastic, sandarac, elemi), different types of shellac, as well as colorants or additives such as madder, dragon’s blood, and Aloe vera powder, and other materials (propolis, beeswax). The aim was to obtain an extensive collection of GC-MS data of silylated pyrolysis products useful for the characterization of the finishes of these unique historical objects. A set of distinct pyrolysis patterns and products were chosen as specific molecular markers for each standard. The method was applied to instrument varnish samples from Stainer, Baioni, Amati, Guarneri, Gasparo da Salo, Maggini, and Guadagnini instruments. The method was shown to be effective for the identification of oxidized lignin, drying oils, and diterpenic resins. In the case of dragon’s blood, madder, shellac, and propolis new markers were identified, suggesting their presence in some instrument varnishes. The identification of proteins and madder appeared most challenging.

A combined experimental and theoretical study on the micro and macroscopic properties of liquid mixtures containing glycerol, as common component, and 2-butanol, 2,3-butanediol, 2-methyl-1-propanol, and benzyl alcohol is reported in this work. Thermophysical properties were measured over the whole compositions range in the 298.15 K-318.15 K temperature range and analyzed considering excess thermodynamic properties in terms of intermolecular forces. Quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics simulations were carried to analyze the properties of mixed systems in terms of the characteristics of hydrogen bonding, nanostructuring and molecular level effects. Considering the importance of tetrazole and imidazole derivatives in pharmacy, industry, and explosives, BNPs@SiO2-TPPTSA was easily prepared and used as an effective, stable, and renewable nanocatalyst for the homoselective synthesis of different 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles and atom economic synthesis of 2,4,5-trisubstituted-1H-imidazoles in solventless conditions. Rubber process oils (RPOs) are generally incorporated to rubber compounds for improving processability and also state-of-mix in some circumstances, for example; in the formulations having relatively high filler content. The aim of this work is to prepare the modified soybean oil (MSO) via transesterification reaction of soybean oil (SO) with benzyl alcohol. The success of modification was evidenced by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). After modification, the new absorption peaks at 3020 cm(-1)and 750 cm(-1)corresponding to -CH stretching vibration and C-H out-of-plane of aromatic were observed.H-1-NMR result also shows the signal of proton in aromatic ring at 7.40-7.55 ppm confirming the presence of aromatic ring in SO. The prepared MSO was then used as rubber processing oil (RPO) in tread compound formulation, and its performance was compared with unmodified SO, distillate aromatic extract oil (DAE) and treated distillate aromatic extract oil (TDAE). The incorporation of RPOs demonstrated cure retardation with a minimal magnitude found in the MSO-filled system. However, the addition of RPOs decreased the mechanical properties, i.e., hardness, modulus, tensile strength and tear strength. Among the studied RPOs, SO showed the poorest performance in terms of rubber mechanical properties, whereas MSO gave the rubber vulcanizate with comparable mechanical properties to DAE and TDAE. Similar to DAE and TDAE, the addition of MSO resulted in the improved wet grip with the sacrifice of rolling resistance.

In this study, we have designed, synthesized and full characterized a novel biological based acidic nano organocatalyst via condensations reaction of uric acid and phosphorous acid. The obtained compound was named theacrine tetrakis(phosphonic acid) (TTPA) and prepared under refluxing ethanol. Targeting Streptococcus mutans is the primary focus in reducing dental caries, one of the most common maladies in the world. Previously, our groups discovered a potent bactericidal biaryl compound that was inspired by the natural product honokiol. Herein, a structure activity relationship (SAR) study to ascertain structural motifs key to inhibition is outlined. Furthermore, mechanism studies show that bacterial membrane disruption is central to the bacterial growth inhibition. During this process, it was discovered that analog C2 demonstrated a 4-fold better therapeutic index compared to the commercially available antimicrobial cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) making it a viable alternative for oral care.

A concise route for the (BuO2H)-Bu-t/Cu(acac)(2)-mediated synthesis of 1-oxoisochromans is described. Three novel heteropolyanion-based Bronsted acidic ionic liquids (BAILs), butane mono sulfoacid-functionalized 1,10-phenanthrolinum, butane mono and bis sulfoacid-functionalized 1,4-dimethylpiperazinium salts of phosphortungstate catalyst (PhBs(1)-PW, [PipBs(1)](3)-PW and [PipBs(2)](3)-(PW)(2)) were synthesized and well characterized with FTIR, H-1 and C-13 NMR, Electro-Spray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS), Elemental analysis (CHNS), EDX and TG analysis techniques. The esterification reactions of monocarboxylic acids with monohydric alcohols were carried out using these catalysts. The introduced catalysts present a self-separation performance after reaction, which can be easily recovered and quite steadily reused as confirmed by six-run recycling test. Moreover, bis sulfoacidfunctionalized 1,4-dimethylpiperazinium salt of phosphortungstate showed the best catalytic performance among the prepared catalysts for the esterification reaction. Fingerprint development is one of the most useful techniques in forensic investigation. The powder method is widely used, as it consists of a non-destructive testing. However, some of the powders commonly used are toxic and dangerous to human health. In this sense, monofunctional analogues of curcumin (3a-e) are proposed as novel coloring powders for the development of latent fingerprints. Granulometric and scanning electron microscopy analysis were performed for a better understanding of the interaction between developers and substrates. The best results for the development of fingerprints were obtained with compound (1E,4E)-1,5-di-p-tolylpenta-1,4-dien-3-one (3b). Development with this compound was specific and allowed detection both from male and female donors. Also, in an in vitro experiment, compound 3b presented low cytotoxicity in a mammalian cell line. Based on that, a novel alternative for latent fingerprint developers was proposed.
