The recent growing concern driven by consumer interest in the safety and quality of seafood, has boosted the search for healthy and functional aquafeeds. The current study represents the first approach to assess the potential of volatile composition of the wine industry by products (e.g., grape pomace, grape stems, lees), as additives for improving the quality of fish feeds in terms of organoleptic characteristics (e.g., aroma and flavor) and health benefits. Headspace solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS) was used to establish the volatile profile of wine industry by-products. A total of 153 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which belong to different chemical families, comprising 36 esters, 31 carbonyl compound, 20 alcohols, 18 terpenoids, 17 acids, 11 furanic compounds, four volatile phenols, two lactones, and 14 miscellaneous, were identified. Esters and terpenoids showed a positive contribution to the aquafeeds aroma with fruity, sweet, green, fresh, and berry notes, whereas some acids (e.g., hexanoic acid) and terpenoids (e.g., limonene) could be used as antimicrobial, antioxidant and antiproliferative agents. Our findings confirmed the potential of wine industry by-products as a rich source of essential compounds to enhance the quality of aquafeeds towards the valorization of winery waste based on the concept of circular economy. Further investigation on the extraction, isolation and purification of VOCs from a natural bio-source will guarantee the safety of the aquafeed and compliance with the requirements of the animal feed industry.

Corrosion inhibition of mild steel (MS) by a series of 4-aminoantipyrine-based Schiff base has been studied in 1 N HCl aqueous medium adopting electrochemical method at different concentration (10(-2)-10(-5) M) and temperature (303-333 K). All of the inhibitors were found to be dominated by cathodic/anodic in nature (mixed type). Electrochemical impedence and polarization studies were in agreement with each other. The surface morphology (smoothness and roughness) was characterized by SEM, which indicates the formation of protective layer on the MS surface. The substituents on the Schiff bases influence their corrosion inhibition properties. Schiff bases having -OCH3, -OH and -NMe2 substituents exhibit more inhibition tendency as compared to other substituents. The role of cross conjugation in electron donating as well as accepting properties by heteroatom (N, O) and pi-electrons in corrosion inhibition was clearly observed from DFT calculations. Monolayer formation on the MS surface has been confirmed from the Langmuir isotherm fitting. Thermodynamic modeling has been done to understand the nature of adsorption. The values of Delta G (>-30 kJ/mol/K) indicate the existence of both physical and chemical interactions between the Schiff base molecules and metal surface. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. To explore the application potential of dual prodrug strategies in the development of anti-HCV agents, a variety of sofosbuvir derivatives with modifications at the C4 or N3 position of the uracil moiety were designed and synthesized. Some compounds exhibited potent anti-HCV activities, such as 4e and 8a-8c with similar EC50 values (0.20-0.22 mu M) comparative to that of sofosbuvir (EC50= 0.18 mu M) in a genotype 1b based replicon Huh7 cell line. Moreover, 8b displayed a good human plasma stability profile, and was easily metabolized in human liver microsomes expectantly. On the other hand, aiming to discover novel anti-HCV nucleosides, pyrazin-2(1H)-one nucleosides and their phosphoramidate prodrugs were investigated. Several active compounds were discovered, such as 25e (EC50= 7.3 mu M) and S-29b (EC50= 19.5 mu M). This kind of nucleosides were interesting and would open a new avenue for the development of antiviral agents.

The present study evaluated the effects of essential oil (EO) from anise (AO), clove (CO) and thyme (TO) on the performance of lactating Shame goats. Eight lactating Shame goats with average body weight 34.90 +/- 0.9 kg and 3 years old were randomly assigned to four treatments in a duplicated 4 x 4 Latin square design, with four periods of 22 days. In each period, the goats were adapted to the treatments for 15 days and the remaining 7 days was used for sample collection. Goats were fed a basal diet without supplementation (control) or supplemented with anise (AO), thyme (TO) or clove (CO) at a daily dose of 2 mL/head/d. Feed intake was not affected by EO supplementations. Digestibility of organic matter, ether extract and acid detergent fibre was higher (P < 0.05) with EO supplementations when compared with the control. Supplementations of EO had no effect on milk (g/d) yield, protein and lactose, as well as the composition (g/kg) of protein and lactose. Fat yield (g/d) and fat content (g/kg) were greater (P < 0.05) in EO supplemented goats versus those on the control diet. Compared with control, ruminal ammonia-N was not affected whereas, ruminal pH was increased (P = 0.02) with EO supplementations. Rumen total volatile fatty acid concentration and molar proportion of acetate (C2) were higher (P < 0.05) in goats fed CO and TO compared to control, whereas propionate (C3) and butyrate (C4) and C2:C3 proportions were unchanged with EO inclusion. With the exception of a decrease (P = 0.05) in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) with EO supplementations, other blood parameters were not affected. Milk C8 and C12 fatty acids (FA) were lower (P < 0.05) with EO supplementations compared with control. Composition of unsaturated and monounsaturated FA was higher (P < 0.05) and polyunsaturated FA was decreased (P < 0.05) with EO supplementations compared with control. Proportions of C18:1 n-9 C18:3 n-3 and n-3 FA were increased (P < 0.05) and proportions of C18:3 n-6 C20:4 n-6 and n-6 FA were decreased (P < 0.05) in goats fed EO compared to the control group. Overall, all three EOs tested in this study had beneficial effects on digestion, rumen fermentation parameters and milk composition including milk FA profile. Supplementation of CO and TO tended to increase PUFA concentration in the milk which supports their recommendation in the diet of lactating ruminants. Category: indole-building-block. The selective oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes by O-2 instead of stoichiometric oxidants (for example, Mn-VII, Cr-VI, and Os-IV) is an important but challenging process. Most heterogeneous catalytic systems (thermal and photocatalysis) require noble metals or harsh reaction conditions. Here we show that the Bi24O31Br10(OH) photocatalyst is very efficient in the selective oxidation of a series of aliphatic (carbon chain from C-1 to C-10) and aromatic alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes/ketones under visible-light irradiation in air at room temperature, which would be challenging for conventional thermal and light-driven processes. High quantum efficiencies (71% and 55% under 410 and 450nm irradiation) are reached in a representative reaction, the oxidation of isopropanol. We propose that the outstanding performance of the Bi24O31Br10(OH) photocatalyst is associated with basic surface sites and active lattice oxygen that boost the dehydrogenation step in the photo-oxidation of alcohols.

Herein we report an exclusively ligand-centered redox controlled approach for the dehydrogenation of a variety of N-heterocycles using a Zn(II)-stabilized azo-anion radical complex as the catalyst. A simple, easy-to-prepare, and bench-stable Zn(II)-complex (1b) featuring the tridentate arylazo pincer, 2-((4-chlorophenyl)diazenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline, in the presence of zinc-dust, undergoes reduction to form the azo-anion radical species [1b]which efficiently dehydrogenates various saturated N-heterocycles such as 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-methylquinoline, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-isoquinoline, indoline, 2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzoimidazole, 2,3-dihydro-2-phenylquinazolin-4(1H)-one, and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-phenylquinazolines, among others, under air. The catalyst has further been found to be compatible with the cascade synthesis of these N-heterocycles via dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols with other suitable coupling partners under air. Mechanistic investigation reveals that the dehydrogenation reactions proceed via a one-electron hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) pathway where the zinc-stabilized azo-anion radical ligand abstracts the hydrogen atom from the organic substrate(s), and the whole catalytic cycle proceeds via the exclusive involvement of the ligand-centered redox events where the zinc acts only as the template.

A bis-acylation strategy to access functionalized anthraquinones via one-pot relay process, is presented. The first acylation was feasible under [Pd]-catalyzed intermolecular direct acylation reaction, while, the second acylation was accomplished by using intramolecular Friedel-Crafts acylation. Notably, benchtop aldehydes have been utilized as non-toxic acylation agents in the key [Pd]-catalyzed acylation.

An oxidative trifunctionalization of aryl alkynoates has been devised via the chalcogenide radical triggered intramolecular 1,4-aryl migration/decarboxylation cascade to prepare 1,1-dichalcogenide tetrasubstituted alkenes in high yields (up to 98 %). This operationally simple reaction proceeds under metal-free conditions, can be executed on gram scale, and highlights formal 1,1-difunctionalization of alkynes. Synthetic potential of this protocol was demonstrated through a twofold cascade rearrangement to access highly conjugated tetra-selenylated alkenes along with a cross-dehydrogenative annulation to prepare fluorene derivative.

Three series of thiazolylhydrazone derivatives were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their neuraminidase (NA) inhibitory activity against influenza virus H1N1 in vitro. Compounds 1 and 2 were synthesized via the one-pot reaction and compound 3 was synthesized in two steps. Pharmacological results showed that the majority of the target compounds 1, 2, and 3 exhibited moderate-to-good influenza NA inhibitory activity. The NA inhibitory activity of the most active compound 2g (IC50=7.12g/ml) is better than that of the lead compound A. Molecular docking was performed to study the possible interactions between compound 2g and the active site of NA. On the basis of biological results, a preliminary structure-activity relationship (SAR) was derived and discussed. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculation was also performed to explain why the thiazolylhydrazone skeleton has NA inhibitory activity, especially compound 2g with the most potent inhibitory activity.

Rivastigmine, a dual inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), has been approved by U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) dementia. In the current work, a bambuterol derivative lacking one of the carbamoyloxy groups on the benzene ring (BMC-1) and its analogues were synthesized using 1-(3-hydroxyphenyl) ethan-1-one and 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl) ethan-1-one as starting materials. In-vitro cholinesterase assay established that nine compounds were more potent to inhibit both electric eel AChE and equine serum BChE than rivastigmine under the same experimental conditions. Further study confirmed that among the nine carbamates, BMC-3 (IC50(AChE) = 792 nM, IC50(BChE) = 2.2 nM) and BMC-16 (IC50(AChE) = 266 nM, IC50(BChE) = 10.6 nM) were excellent cholinesterase inhibitors with potential of permeating through the blood-brain barrier. These carbamates could be used as potential dual inhibitors of AChE and BChE and to discover novel drugs for the treatment of AD and PD dementia.
