The synthesis, mesomorphic and dielectric investigation of new unsymmetrical bent-core mesogens derived from 3-hydroxybenzoic acid central core with linked two rodlike units carrying (S)-3,7-dimethyloctyloxy group and an n-alkyloxy chain at both terminals are presented. The liquid crystalline properties of the new unsymmetrical bent-core materials have been investigated by polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. New compounds with the reversed ester linking unit exhibit a monotropic or enantiotropic columnar mesophase at lower temperatures as compared to analogs with a straight chain depending on the presence of the branched (S)-3,7-dimethyloctyloxy terminal chain. Dielectric measurements for one of the bent-core mesogens, 3-[[4-[[4-(octyloxy)benzoyl]oxy]benzoyl]oxy]benzoic acid 4-[[4-((S)-3,7-dimethyloctyloxy)phenoxy]carbonyl]phenyl ester (OBDPE), have been carried out on the angular frequency range from 25.12 to 50265k rad/s at different temperatures. Thanks to dielectric measurements, real and imaginary dielectric constant, conductivity mechanism and dielectric relaxation mechanism of OBDPE were obtained. [GRAPHICS] .

Gold catalysts have been reported to exhibit good performance in aerobic oxidation of alcohols, but the intrinsic origin of the catalytic reactivity is still illusive. The catalyst preparation method, the morphology of the gold particles, and even the support might be key factors that determine the activity. Here, we prepared a series of gold catalysts with different supports, i.e., the hydrotalcite (HT), ZnO, MgO, Al2O3, and SiO2, by using the atomically controlled Au-25 nanoclusters (NCs) as the gold precursor. The characterization results of the X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show that the gold particles were mostly uniformly distributed on the supports, with a mean particle size within 3 nm. In aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol, the MgAl-HT- and Al2O3-supported Au-25 NCs display good performances, with turnover frequency (TOF) values of 2927 and 2892 h(-1), respectively, whereas the SiO2-, MgO-, and ZnO-supported analogues show much inferior activity. The high resolution TEM and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) results suggest that the interactions between gold and the supports in different samples are differing, which influences the morphology and the nature of gold. Our results further point to the importance of acid-base property of the support and the metal-support synergy rather than the gold particle size alone in achieving high-performance in selective alcohol oxidation. Moreover, this work provided a good way to design gold catalysts with controllable sizes that is crucial for understanding the reaction process in aerobic oxidation of alcohol.

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomena have gained intense interest over the last decades because of its importance in solid-state emission. However, the elucidation of a working mechanism is difficult owing to the limited characterization methods on solid-state molecules, further complicated if dynamic structural changes occur. Here, a series of bis-arylacylhydrazones (BAHs) were synthesized, for which their AIE properties are only turned on by the reversible adsorption of water molecules. We used microcrystal electron diffraction (MicroED) to determine the molecular structures of two BAHs directly from bulk powders (without attempting to grow crystals) prepared in the absence or presence of water adsorption. This study reveals the unambiguous characterization of the dependence of crystal packing on the specific cocrystallization with hydrates. The structural analysis demonstrates that water molecules form strong hydrogen bonds with three neighboring BAH-1, resulting in the almost complete planarization and restriction of the intramolecular rotation of the molecule. MicroED plays an important role in providing a decisive clue for the reversible polymorphism changes induced by the adsorption of water molecules, regulating emissive properties.

Background: Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors have emerged as anti-hyperglycemic agents that improve glycemic control in type 2 diabetic patients, either as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic drugs. Methods: A novel series of dihydropyrimidine phthalimide hybrids was synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro and in vivo DPP-4 inhibition activity and selectivity using alogliptin as reference. Oral glucose tolerance test was assessed in type 2 diabetic rats after chronic treatment with the synthesized hybrids +/- metformin. Cytotoxicity and antioxidant assays were performed. Additionally, molecular docking study with DPP-4 and structure activity relationship of the novel hybrids were also studied. Results: Among the synthesized hybrids, 10g, 10i, 10e, 10d and 10b had stronger in vitro DPP-4 inhibitory activity than alogliptin. Moreover, an in vivo DPP-4 inhibition assay revealed that 10g and 10i have the strongest and the most extended blood DPP-4 inhibitory activity compared to alogliptin. In type 2 diabetic rats, hybrids 10g, 10i and 10e exhibited better glycemic control than alogliptin, an effect that further supported by metformin combination. Finally, 10j, 10e, 10h and 10d had the highest radical scavenging activity in DPPH assay. Conclusions: Hybrids 10g, 10i and 10e are potent DPP-4 inhibitors which may be beneficial for T2DM treatment.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have unusual physical properties that are valuable for nanotechnology and electronics, but the chemical synthesis of chirality- and diameter-specific CNTs and pi-conjugated CNT segments is still a great challenge. Reported here are the selective syntheses, isolations, characterizations, and photophysical properties of two novel chiral conjugated macrocycles ([4]cyclo-2,6-anthracene; [4]CAn(2,6)), as (-)/(+)-(12,4) carbon nanotube segments. These conjugated macrocyclic molecules were obtained using a bottom-up assembly approach and subsequent reductive elimination reaction. The hoop-shaped molecules can be directly viewed by a STM technique. In addition, chiral enantiomers with (-)/(+) helicity of the [4]CAn(2,6) were successfully isolated by HPLC. The new tubular CNT segments exhibit large absorption and photoluminescence redshifts compared to the monomer unit. The carbon enantiomers are also observed to show strong circularly polarized luminescence (g(lum)approximate to 0.1). The results reported here expand the scope of materials design for bottom-up synthesis of chiral macrocycles and enrich existing knowledge of their optoelectronic properties.

BackgroundLaminitis is a common and serve disease which caused by inflammation and pathological changes of the laminar junction. However, the pathologic mechanism remains unclear. In this study we aimed to investigate changes of the gut microbiota and metabolomics in oligofructose-induced laminitis of horses.ResultsAnimals submitted to treatment with oligofructose had lower fecal pH but higher lactic acid, histamine, and Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in serum. Meanwhile, oligofructose altered composition of the hindgut bacterial community, demonstrated by increasing relative abundance of Lactobacillus and Megasphaera. In addition, the metabolome analysis revealed that treatment with oligofructose decreased 84 metabolites while 53 metabolites increased, such as dihydrothymine, N3,N4-Dimethyl-L-arginine, 10E,12Z-Octadecadienoic acid, and asparagine. Pathway analysis revealed that aldosterone synthesis and secretion, regulation of lipolysis in adipocytes, steroid hormone biosynthesis, pyrimidine metabolism, biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, and galactose metabolism were significantly different between healthy and laminitis horses. Furthermore, correlation analysis between gut microbiota and metabolites indicated that Lactobacillus and/or Megasphaera were positively associated with the dihydrothymine, N3,N4-Dimethyl-L-arginine, 10E,12Z-Octadecadienoic acid, and asparagine.ConclusionsThese results revealed that disturbance of gut microbiota and changes of metabolites were occurred during the development of equine laminitis, and these results may provide novel insights to detect biomarkers for a better understanding of the potential mechanism and prevention strategies for laminitis in horses.

The conversion of guaiacol into the nylon precursors, cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone, is catalyzed by palladium supported on high surface area ceria (Pd/HS CeO2) under mild conditions (100 degrees C, <= 1 bar H-2) via sequential hydrodemethoxylation and hydrogenation. In contrast, the 2-methoxycyclohexanol side product is generated by direct guaiacol hydrogenation. Reaction selectivity is determined by competing CeO bond hydrogenolysis versus arene hydrogenation. Hydrogenolysis selectivity increases as H-2 pressure decreases, and over 80 % H-2 is incorporated into the products at 1 bar H-2. Higher reactivity of guaiacol than anisole implies that the hydroxyl group is essential in Pd/HS CeO2 catalysis. Participation of water in the conversion is evidenced by deuterium incorporation at non-exchangeable positions when the reaction is performed in D2O. The combination of near quantitative mass balance of H-2, high recyclability, and use of water as a solvent offers a simple, green and efficient conversion of lignin-derived aromatics into commercial products. It is possible to control the crosslink density of polymers derived from monobenzoxazines by switching the type of substituents in the phenolic ring and their relative position with respect to the phenol group. We prepared several substituted monobenzoxazines in the para and meta positions of the phenolic ring and studied how these substituents affected the polymerization temperature of monomers and the thermal stability of the final polymers and, more extensively, how they affected the crosslink network of the final polymers. Gel content and dynamic mechanical analysis confirm that ortho- and para-orienting substituents in the meta position generate highly crosslinked materials compared to para ones. This fact can lead to the design of materials with highly crosslinked networks based on monobenzoxazines, simpler and more versatile monomers than the commercial bisbenzoxazines currently in use.

The Name is Benzyl Alcohol. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of 100-51-6.

Barrier materials have wide applicability in both professional (military, medical, industrial) and non-professional (leisure and sports) fields. This paper focuses on the preparation of real conductive polymer (CP) sensors, for the study of the permeation of volatile toxic compounds through barrier materials. Use of such a CP sensor can help improve the quality of barrier materials used in protective clothing. Several types of platforms have been manufactured or purchased for use as comb sensors with different electrode dimensions, and a suitable method of applying the detection layer of conductive polymers (polyaniline and poly-pyrrole) has been developed. Prepared sensors were obtained using various technologies and were assessed not only for response to exposure to vapors of volatile toxic substances, but also for the possibility of their incorporation into a permeation cell, in order to expand the possibilities of using existing permeation devices. The resulting conductivity of the surface film ranges from 50 to 10,000 mu S/cm. When exposed to ethanol vapors, the conductivity of the sensors dropped significantly and returned to the original value after exposure ended. The conductivity of the B12 CP sensor was in the range of 10-100 mS/cm and is considered the most valuable tested sensor. CPs deposited on this substrate have very high sensitivity in units of ppm (in special cases, even ppb) within the detection of analytes (in this case toxic vapors of ethanol, acetic acid) and the ability to return to initial (zero) conductivity. We describe here the facile construction of sterically hindered tertiary alkyl ethers and thioethers via the Zn(OTf)(2)-catalyzed coupling of alcohols/phenols with unactivated tertiary alkyl bromides and the Cu(OTf)(2)-catalyzed thiolation of unactivated tertiary alkyl oxalates with thiols. The present protocol represents one of the most effective unactivated tertiary C(sp(3))-heteroatom bond-forming conditions via readily accessible Lewis acid catalysis that is surprisingly less developed.
