Iridium complexes bearing 2-phenylimidazo[4,5-f]-[1,10]-phenanthroline with different substituents (CH3, -CH(CH3)(2), -OCH3, -C6H5) were synthesized and characterized. The effects of different substituents and solvents on the photoluminescence properties of the complexes with [Cl] and [PF6] counter anions have been investigated. The synthesized complexes show high photoluminescence quantum yield due to the extension of the pi-electron conjugation of 2-phenylimidazo[4,5-f][1,10]-phenanthroline ligands. The results indicate that the choice of counter anions ([CI] and [PF6]) has an important influence on the quantum yield of the complexes. In toluene, the compound 4 with phenyl substituent exhibits excimer emission with increasing solution concentrations in the presence of [Cl] counter anion. The linear correlation was observed between the redox potentials of the complexes and Hammett Substituent Constants. The linear correlation can allow the prediction of the effects of substituents on electrochemical studies. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Applications of TEMPO(.)catalysis for the development of redox-neutral transformations are rare. Reported here is the first TEMPO.-catalyzed, redox-neutral C-H di- and trifluoromethoxylation of (hetero)arenes. The reaction exhibits a broad substrate scope, has high functional-group tolerance, and can be employed for the late-stage functionalization of complex druglike molecules. Kinetic measurements, isolation and resubjection of catalytic intermediates, UV/Vis studies, and DFT calculations support the proposed oxidative TEMPO./TEMPO(+)redox catalytic cycle. Mechanistic studies also suggest that Li(2)CO(3)plays an important role in preventing catalyst deactivation. These findings will provide new insights into the design and development of novel reactions through redox-neutral TEMPO(.)catalysis.

The nickel-catalyzed benzylic substitution of benzyl alcohol derivatives with a soft carbon nucleophile is extremely rare compared to that with a hard carbon nucleophile. We have achieved the nickel-catalyzed benzylic substitution of benzyl esters with malonates as a soft carbon nucleophile. Primary and secondary benzyl 2,3,4,5,6-penta-fluorobenzoates as well as a wide variety of malonate derivatives were well tolerated in the nickel-catalyzed reaction, providing the corresponding alkylation products in 46-86% yields (34 examples). Additionally, we propose a possible reaction mechanism that would undergo via the eta(1)- and eta(3)-benzylnickel intermediates.

In the presence of [p-cymene)RuCl2](2), (E)-configured alkenyl bromides couple with aromatic carboxylates to form orthovinylbenzoic acids. This C-H vinylation proceeds in high yields without any activating phosphine ligands and has an excellent functional group tolerance. Starting from commonly available (E/Z)-mixtures of alkenyl bromides, (E)-configured vinyl arenes or dienes are formed exclusively. Mechanistic studies show that this selectivity is achieved because the (E)configured alkenyl bromides undergo a smooth coupling, whereas the (Z)-isomers are rapidly eliminated with the formation of alkynes.

The radiation-induced reactions of ligands play an important role in the sensitization of metal oxide nanocluster resists. However, the details in the radiation chemistry of ligands for metal oxide nanocluster resists are still unknown. In this study, the radiation-induced reactions of carboxylic acid ligands were investigated using a pulse radiolysis method. The rate constants for the reactions of molecular and ionic forms of tiglic, angelic, o-toluic, and p-toluic acids with hydrated electrons were determined. The rate constants for the reactions of tiglic, angelic, benzoic, o-toluic, and p-toluic acids with dodecane radical cations were also determined. The radical ions of tiglic and angelic acids were more unstable than those of benzoic, o-toluic, and p-toluic acids. The results obtained in this study indicate that the molecular structures of ligands affect their reactivity to cationic and anion species and the stability of their radical cations and anions. Accurate dietary assessment is a challenge in nutritional research, needing powerful and robust tools for reliable measurement of food intake biomarkers. In this work, we have developed a novel quantitative dietary fingerprinting (QDF) approach, which enables for the first time the simultaneous quantitation of about 350 urinary food-derived metabolites, including (poly)phenolic aglycones, phase II metabolites, and microbial-transformed compounds, as well as other compounds (e.g., glucosinolates, amino acid derivatives, methylxanthines, alkaloids, and markers of alcohol and tobacco consumption). This method was fully validated for 220 metabolites, yielding good linearity, high sensitivity and precision, accurate recovery rates, and negligible matrix effects. Furthermore, 127 additional phase II metabolites were also included in this method after identification in urines collected from acute dietary interventions with various foods. Thus, this metabolomic approach represents one-step further toward precision nutrition and the objective of improving the accurateness and comprehensiveness in the assessment of dietary patterns and lifestyles.

Qing Dai (Naturalis Indigo) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) used as a topical agent in moderate psoriasis, targeting interleukin-17 (IL-17). In this study, it was prepared from the aerial parts of Strobilanthes cusia. Three undescribed indole alkaloid derivatives, indigodoles A-C, along with seven known compounds were isolated from this preparation of Qing Dai and their structures were elucidated from spectroscopic data, including NMR, MS, UV, IR, optical rotation, and CD. As well, most compounds were tested against IL-17. Indigodole C and tryptanthrin could significantly inhibit IL-17 production of Th17 cells. In addition, indigodole A and indirubin showed notably anti-IL-17 gene expression in dose-dependent effects without cytotoxicities toward Th17 and Jurkat cells, respectively. Overall, our studies indicate that the aforementioned indole alkaloids could contribute to anti-IL 17 properties of Qing Dai.

Substantial advances in enantioconvergent C(sp(3))-C(sp(3)) bond formation reactions have been made in recent years through the use of transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of racemic secondary alkyl electrophiles with organometallic reagents. Herein, we report a general process for the asymmetric construction of alkyl-alkyl bonds adjacent to heteroatoms, namely, a nickel-catalyzed enantioconvergent reductive hydroalkylation of olefins with alpha-heteroatom phosphorus or sulfur alkyl electrophiles. Including the use of readily available olefins, this reaction has considerable advantages, such as mild reaction conditions, a broad substrate scope, and good functional group compatibility, making it a desirable alternative to traditional electrophile-nucleophile cross-coupling reactions.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and their corresponding N-oxides (PANOs) have been determined in food and feed at levels relevant for consumer health. More than 660 different PAs have been detected, but few are available as reference substances for analytical demands. In the context of the European legislation on maximum levels of PAs in food products, a defined analytical scope of 21 PAs for determination has been suggested. An expansion of the scope from 21 to 35 PAs, including 14 structural isomers, is currently under discussion. In the present study, a target screening method was established for a comprehensive characterisation of PA profiles of the species Echium vulgare, Heliotropium europaeum, Cynoglossum officinale and Symphytum spp. to assess whether an expansion of the analytical scope is required to quantitatively cover the total PA contents of Boraginaceae species. The scope of the method comprised known and unknown PAs previously screened and confirmed in the respective plant extracts. A total of 176 PAs and PANOs were detected. The toxic 1,2-unsaturated PAs represent the predominant PA type with about 98% of the mean total content. This PA profiling demonstrates that an expansion of the scope from 21 to 35 PAs is required to adequately cover the mean total PA contents of Cynoglossum officinale and H. europaeum, whereas in the case of Symphytum spp. and Echium vulgare an expansion would not be necessary.
