BACKGROUND Edible seaweeds are one of the most important resources that currently exist for their multiple uses and applications. Like other food types, during their storage there are significant changes in sensory characteristics associated with loss of freshness and with production and/or degradation of their volatile compounds. In this study, multiple headspace sorptive extraction (MHSSE) coupled with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) detection has been applied to an edible green seaweed (Ulva rigida) in order to determine the evolution of volatile compounds during storage for 12 days at 4 or 16 degrees C. RESULTS The existing analytical methodology has been updated and validated for 18 additional compounds. At the end, 41 volatile compounds from different chemical families were quantified. Aldehydes, carboxylic acids and esters were the main classes found in U. rigida. Analytical and sensory data were submitted for statistical analysis. During storage, most volatile compounds were only affected by the number of storage days (P < 0.05), with significant decreases as storage time increased. Sensory analysis revealed significant changes in the samples stored for longer times (8, 10 and 12 days), with a clear influence of the boiled vegetable descriptor. CONCLUSION In order to get a successful preservation of seaweeds and to maintain their marine character during storage, both temperature and time should be carefully controlled. Product Details of 100-51-6. I found the field of Plant Sciences very interesting. Saw the article Phenotypic plasticity of floral volatiles in response to increasing drought stress published in 2019.0, Reprint Addresses Campbell, DR (corresponding author), Univ Calif Irvine, Dept Ecol & Evolutionary Biol, Irvine, CA 92717 USA.; Campbell, DR (corresponding author), Rocky Mt Biol Labs, Crested Butte, CO 81224 USA.. The CAS is 100-51-6. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of Benzyl Alcohol.

Background and Aims Flowers emit a wide range of volatile compounds which can be critically important to interactions with pollinators or herbivores. Yet most studies of how the environment influences plant volatiles focus on leaf emissions, with little known about abiotic sources of variation in floral volatiles. Understanding phenotypic plasticity in floral volatile emissions has become increasingly important with globally increasing temperatures and changes in drought frequency and severity. Here quantitative relationships of floral volatile emissions to soil water content were analysed. Methods Plants of the sub-alpine herb Ipomopsis aggregata and hybrids with its closest congener were subjected to a progressive dry down, mimicking the range of soil moistures experienced in the field. Floral volatiles and leaf gas exchange were measured at four time points during the drought. Key Results As the soil dried, floral volatile emissions increased overall and changed in composition, from more 1,3-octadiene and benzyl alcohol to higher representation of some terpenes. Emissions of individual compounds were not linearly related to volumetric water content in the soil. The dominant compound, the monoterpene -pinene, made up the highest percentage of the scent mixture when soil moisture was intermediate. In contrast, emission of the sesquiterpene (E,E)–farnesene accelerated as the drought became more intense. Changes in floral volatiles did not track the time course of changes in photosynthetic rate or stomatal conductance. Conclusions This study shows responses of specific floral volatile organic compounds to soil moisture. The non-linear responses furthermore suggest that extreme droughts may have impacts that are not predictable from milder droughts. Floral volatiles are likely to change seasonally with early summer droughts in the Rocky Mountains, as well as over years as snowmelt becomes progressively earlier. Changes in water availability may have impacts on plant-animal interactions that are mediated through non-linear changes in floral volatiles.

Linear-brush and star-brush poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) with tunable branching degree and side chain length were successfully obtained via metal-free ring-opening polymerization of ethylene oxide using hydroxylated polybutadiene (HPB) as a macroinitiator and t-BuP4 as a catalyst. The branching degree and side chain length of brush PEGs can be tailored simply by controlling the number of hydroxyl groups ([OH]) on backbone and the feed ratio of ethylene oxide/[OH], respectively. The effects of molecular weight and macromolecular architecture on crystallization behavior were systematically investigated through crystallization kinetics and morphologies. In all cases, the thermal parameters, including T-c, Delta H-c, and Delta H-m, increase with increasing molecular weight of side chains, while decrease with an increasing the branching degree, suggesting an increased or reduced crystallinity. According to the Avrami equation, the rate constant K decreases while the n values increase with branching degree increasing. POM observations suggested that the spherulites growth rate G decreases with branching degree increasing under the same supercooling. Nonetheless, with increasing the side chain length, the spherulites growth rate G decreases for linear and star PEGs while increases instead for brush PEGs, suggesting that the crystal growth rate of PEGs is influenced by topological structure and supercooling simultaneously. Consequently, with increasing the side chain length, K-g and sigma(e) increase for linear and star PEGs, while K-g and sigma(e) decrease for brush structures. Both K-g and sigma(e) increase regardless of macromolecular architecture with an increasing branching degree. Based on Hoffman-Lauritzen analysis, the transition of regime II to regime III for brushed PEG (Delta T = 15 K) require larger supercooling than linear and star PEGs (Delta T = 10 K).

Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AlEgens) have attracted increasing attention in recent years on account of their attribute of overcoming the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) phenomenon of conventional organic fluorophores. Despite their remarkable advantages and great developments, most organic AlEgens exhibit broad emission spectra with the full width at half-maxima (FWHM) over 100 nm, which is to the disadvantage of their practical applications. Herein, supramolecular polymeric AIE materials with brighter fluorescence and narrower emission band (higher color purity) than conventional AlEgens were developed by taking advantage of the light-harvesting strategy. These AIE materials, including nanoparticles, microfibers, and thin films, were fabricated from supramolecular polymers comprising quadruple hydrogen-bonded monomer tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and borondipyrromethene (BODIPY) as antenna chromophores and as energy acceptors, respectively. The excitation energy collected by TPE molecules was efficiently transferred to the BODIPY, resulting in up to 6 fold enhanced fluorescence intensity and narrowed emission band with FWHM decreasing from 148 to 32 nm. The resulting nanoparticles showed similar to 5-fold higher brightness than commercial quantum dots. The highly fluorescent nanoparticles were successfully applied for in vitro and in vivo fluorescence and chemiluminescence imaging, showing superior imaging performance to conventional AIE nanoparticles.

In this study, a highly efficient two-component [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of substituted aryl aldehydes with 4-toluenesulfonylmethyl isocyanide (TosMIC) in the presence of 2 equiv of potassium phosphate as a base to 5-substituted oxazoles were established in a isopropanol medium under microwave irradiation. However, using 1 equiv of K3PO4 as a base resulted in the diastereoselective synthesis of 4,5-disubstituted oxazolines under identical reaction conditions. The foremost benefits of these protocols are the moderate-to-excellent yields with good functional group compatibility, simple experimental procedure, inexpensive readily available starting materials, nonchromatographic purification, and high bond-forming efficiency. The synthetic manipulation reported herein represents a cleaner route to the sustainable preparation of 5-substituted oxazoles and diastereoselective 4,5-disubstituted oxazolines derivatives.

As singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) is ubiquitous in the environment, O-1(2)-involved oxidation may play an important role in the transformation and fate of organic pollutants. Accordingly, the reaction rate constants (k(1O2)) of organic compounds with O-1(2) are important to determine the environmental fate and persistence assessment of organic pollutants. However, currently there are limited k(1O2) data available, especially for organic chemicals with different charged (deprotonated/protonated) forms. Herein three quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models (one comprehensive model and two models for neutral and deprotonated molecules) were created for predicting aqueous k(1O2) values for diversely dissociating molecules. The models include larger datasets (180 chemicals) and have wider applicability domain than previous ones. Molecular structural characteristics (only half-wave potential is present in both models) determining the O-1(2) reaction rate of neutral and deprotonated molecules vary greatly. The comparison results of predicting k(1O2) values of organic compounds at certain pH conditions show that the combination of the QSAR models for neutral and deprotonated molecules has advantages over the comprehensive QSAR model. This work is the first study to predict k(1O2) for a wide variety of neutral and deprotonated molecules and provides an important tool for assessing the fate of organic pollutants in aquatic environments.

A magnetically recyclable palladium-catalyzed formylation of aryl iodides under CO gas-free conditions has been developed by using a bidentate phosphine ligand-modified magnetic nanoparticles-anchored- palladium(II) complex [2P-Fe3O4@SiO2-Pd(OAc)(2)] as catalyst, yielding a wide variety of aromatic aldehydes in moderate to excellent yields. Here, formic acid was employed as both the CO source and the hydrogen donor with iodine and PPh3 as the activators. This immobilized palladium catalyst can be obtained via a simple preparative procedure and can be facilely recovered simply by using an external magnetic field, and reused at least 9 times without any apparent loss of catalytic activity.

Indomethacin is a well-known nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that has cytotoxic activity. In this study, a new series of structurally related indomethacin analogues was synthesized using simple chemical approaches, and their cytotoxic effects against five different human cancer cell lines (colon cancer cell lines HCT-116, HT-29 and Caco-2, hepatic cell line HepG-2 and breast cell line MCF-7) were evaluated. Most of the tested compounds displayed potent anti-cancer activity, especially against the three colon cancer cell lines. Among all tested derivatives, compound 12 demonstrated the most potent cytotoxic activity compared to the parent drug indomethacin and the reference compound 5-fluorouracil, with IC 50 values ranging 0.83-1.54 mu M. A mechanistic study of the most active compound against the HCT-116, HT-29 and Caco-2 cell lines revealed cell cycle arrest during the G2/M phase. Compound 12 was found to induce apoptosis through the up-regulation of Bax and p53 by 7.4 and 8.5-fold, respectively, and also the downregulation of Bcl-2 by 3.2-fold compared to the control. Western blot assay was performed on HCT-116 cells and demonstrated marked inhibition of CDK1 and Bcl-2 expression together with an increase in the expression of caspase-3, Bax and p53 in a concentration-dependent manner. Finally, a prediction of the chemo-informatic properties of compounds 11 and 12 indicated that they are orally bioavailable with no permeation of the blood-brain barrier. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V.
