A novel metal-free catalytic one-pot approach has been developed for the esterification of aralkyl ketones with alcohols under open-air atmospheric conditions. The inexpensive iodide/oxone reagent system allowed the cascade C(sp(3))-H bond oxygenation, selective C-C bond cleavage and esterification through the both radical and ionic pathways in a stepwise manner in one-pot. This mild, convenient and economically viable catalytic method tolerates the various functional groups to provide the corresponding alkyl benzoates in up to 98% yields with up to 99% selectivity. The efficiency and feasibility of scale-up of the present catalytic system was demonstrated with gram scale experiments (up to 10 gram scale).

Metal-free conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) as visible-light active and recyclable photocatalysts offer a green and sustainable alternative to classical metal-based photosensitizers. However, the strategy for screening CMP-based heterogeneous photocatalysts has not been interpreted up to now. Herein, we present a general strategy for obtaining excellent solid photocatalysts, which is to implement bandgap engineering in the same series of materials. As a proof of concept, three conjugated porous materials containing benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b0:5,6-b00]trithiophene building blocks (BTT-CMP1, BTT-CMP2 and BTT-CMP3) were successfully constructed. They possess permanent porosity with a large specific surface area and excellent stability. By changing the linker between benzotrithiophene units, the bandgaps, energy levels and photoelectric performances including the absorption, transient photocurrent responses and photocatalytic performances of BTT-CMPs could be handily modulated. Indeed, BTT-CMP2 displayed the best catalytic activity for visible-light-induced synthesis of benzimidazoles among the three CMP materials, even higher than that of small molecule photocatalysts. As a metal-free photocatalyst, interestingly, the screened BTT-CMP2 also showed extensive substrate applicability and outstanding recyclability. Additionally, we have the opinion that this strategy will prove to be a guiding principle for screening superior CMP-based photocatalysts and broaden their application fields.

Propolis also known as bee glue or bee resin is a resinous mixture of bee saliva or bee wax and exudate from tree trunks and flowers, produced by honeybees. The composition of propolis varies depending on the vegetation the bees can access. It is therefore expected that propolis obtained from various localities may have different chemical profiles. In this study, the headspace volatiles of propolis (n = 39) collected from various locations in South Africa (Gauteng, Northern Cape and Western Cape Provinces) were explored for the first time using GCxGC-ToF-MS. Several GCxGC parameters were optimised including; incubation time, temperature and modulation period. Multivariate data analysis techniques (principal component and hierarchical cluster analyses) were applied on the GCxGC-ToF-MS data to investigate trends and clustering patterns within propolis samples. The results demonstrated that headspace volatiles of propolis varied between locations. The volatile profiles were dominated by monoterpenes such as alpha-pinene (1.2-46.5%), beta-pinene (2.0-21.8%), dihydrosabinene (trace-17.8%), limonene (trace-11.6%), p-cymene (0.15.3%), 1,8-cineole (0.1-11.0%), 2,7-dimethyl-3-octen-5-yne (trace-11.7%), E-beta-ocimene (trace-17.8%), octanal (trace-12.9%), styrene (trace-13.5%) and alpha-thujene (trace-11.0%). Principal component analysis revealed chemical variation within propolis from the various locations. The heatmap of the averages revealed dehydrosabinene, isopropentyltoluene, p-cymene, acetophenone and alpha-thujene as chemical markers for the Northern Cape propolis, while lambda-terpinene, propanoic acid, furfural, 2-methoxy benzyl alcohol and hexanoic acid methylester were filtered out as markers for Gauteng propolis. The propolis samples originating from the Western Cape Province were dominated by prenal, cinnamaldehyde styrene, 1,8-cineole, decanal, prenyl acetate and butanoic acid. Using GCxGC-ToF-MS in combination with chemometrics, it was possible to profile headspace volatile constituents of propolis and further identify marker compounds that differentiate propolis from various provinces in South Africa. A recyclable and efficient heterogeneous, green catalyst based on the synthesis of Keggin-type polyoxometalate (H3PMo12O40) and vitamin B1 analogue 3-ethyl-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methylthiazol-3-ium (HEMT), i.e., [HEMTH]H-2[PMo12O40] was prepared. This report describes the development and optimization of the one-pot method for the synthesis of N-protected 1-aminoalkylphosphonium salts based on the three-component coupling of aldehydes and either amides, carbamates, lactams, imides, or urea in the presence of triarylphosphonium salts. The proposed strategy is very efficient and easy to carry out even on a larger scale (20 g) in any typical laboratory. Most reactions occur at temperatures between 50 and 100 degrees C in a short time (1-2 h) without requiring any catalyst, and simple workup procedures afford good to excellent yields. The exceptions are condensations with imides, which require much higher temperatures (150-170 degrees C) and longer reaction times (even 30 h). The possibility of carrying out the synthesis under solvent-free conditions (neat reactions) is also demonstrated. It is especially important for less reactive substrates (imides), and reactions required high temperature (or generally harsher conditions). Finally, we prove the developed one-pot methodology can be successfully applied for the synthesis of structurally diverse N-protected 1-aminoalkylphosphonium salts. Mechanistic studies showed the intermediate products of described couplings are 1-hydroxyalkylphosphonium salts, not N-hydroxyalkylamides, -imides, etc., as initially expected.

We recently identified unique caterpillar-induced plant volatile compounds emitted from apple leaves infested with the larvae of various leafroller species. In subsequent field tests, binary blends of phenylacetonitrile + acetic acid and 2-phenylethanol +acetic acid were found to be attractive to a range of tortricid leafroller species (Tortricidae: Tortricinae) in both the Southern and Northern Hemispheres. In this work, the caterpillar-induced plant volatiles from the apple-leafroller system were tested in two vineyards in Spain and Hungary for their attractiveness to the grape frugivore Lobesia botrana (Tortricidae: Olethreutinae). As seen for Tortricinae species, a binary blend of phenylacetonitrile +acetic acid attracted significantly more male and female L. botrana to traps than acetic acid or blank lures. Traps baited with other caterpillar-induced plant volatile compounds (benzyl alcohol, 2-phenylethanol, indole, and (E)-nerolidol, each as a binary blend with acetic acid) did not catch significantly more moths than traps containing acetic acid alone. The catches of male and female moths support an optimistic future for new products in female tortricid surveillance and control that are based on combinations of kairomone compounds released from larval-damaged foliage.

The stereospecific gold(i)-catalyzed nucleophilic cyclization of beta-monosubstituted o-(alkynyl)styrenes to produce C-1 functionalized 1H-indenes including challenging substrates and nucleophiles, such as beta-(cyclo)alkyl-substituted o-(alkynyl)styrenes and a variety of alcohols as well as selected electron-rich aromatics, is reported. DFT calculations support the stereochemical outcome of the process that involves the formation of a key cyclopropyl gold carbene intermediate through a regiospecific 5-endo cyclization.
