Fenclorim is a commercial herbicide safener with fungicidal activity used for chloroacetanilide herbicides, which might be suitable as a lead compound for screening novel fungicides. However, little has been reported so far on the structure-activity relationship of fungicidal activities of fenclorim or its analogues. Here, a series of 4-chloro-6-substituted phenoxy-2-phenylpyrimidine derivatives was synthesized by a substructure splicing route using fenclorim as a lead compound. The structures of synthesized derivatives were characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and HRMS. Their fungicidal and herbicide safening activities were then evaluated. The results revealed that compound 11 had the best fungicidal activity against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Thanatephorus cucumeris, which was better than that of the control pyrimethanil. Moreover, compounds 3, 5, and 25 exhibited excellent safening activities against fresh weight, plant height, and root length, respectively. Such activities were significantly improved when compared to fenclorim. In summary, these findings look promising for the preparation of new fungicides and herbicide safeners based on the structure of fenclorim.

Versatile redox catalysts play the significant roles in alcohol oxidations, in which the mechanisms for homogeneous and heterogeneous alcohol oxidations are generally different. This work introduced a Lewis acid (LA) promoted homogeneous alcohol oxidation with Pd (OAc)(2) catalyst by using oxygen balloon as the oxidant source. It was found that adding Lewis acid such as Sc (OTf)(3) significantly accelerated Pd (II)-catalyzed alcohol oxidations; notably, the time courses of oxidations monitored by GC and H-1 NMR disclosed that there existed two processes including the initial sluggish oxidation followed by a rapid oxidation. The promotional effect of Lewis acid was attributed to the formation of heterobimetallic Pd (II)/LA species, which improved the oxidizing power of the palladium (II) species, thus accelerating alcohol oxidation in the induction period. Correlating the sizes of in situ generated palladium nanoparticles with the time course of alcohol oxidation further disclosed that the loosely, spherically large nanoparticles, which were composed of many tiny nanoparticles having the size less than 10 nm, were responsible for the rapid oxidation, whereas those highly dispersed, tiny nanoparticles having the size less than 10 nm were not responsible for the rapid oxidation.

A novel series of 7,8-dichlorobenzofuro[3,2-c]quinoline-6,9,10(5H)-triones was obtained regioselectively in good yields. The products were formed by the reactions of the 4-hydroxy-2(1H)-quinolinones with 3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1,2-benzoquinone in tetrahydrofuran as the solvent. Infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance (two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance), mass spectra and elemental analysis were used to elucidate the structures of new compounds.

In this study, simple and effective methods were used for the preparation of an ionic liquid that immobilized magnetite nanoparticles. Fe3O4 nanoparticles were prepared via a chemical co-precipitation method. Then, a SiO2 shell was coated on the magnetic core via the Stober method. Finally, CPTES (chloropropyltriethoxysilane) and morpholine were coated on the SiO2 shell. Morpholine sulfate, an acidic ionic liquid, was successfully bound to magnetite nanoparticles (Mag@Morph-AIL) and this was used as an efficient catalyst for the preparation of 3,4-dihydropyrimidinones. Compared to previous works, the easy separation of the nanocatalyst using an external magnet and the recyclability, non-toxicity, versatility, and high stability of the catalyst, combined with low reaction times and excellent yields, make the present protocol very useful for the synthesis of the title products. The synthesized products and catalyst were confirmed via(1)H-NMR, C-13-NMR, FT-IR, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and elemental analysis.

The present study reports the synthesis of new purine bioisosteres comprising a pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine scaffold linked to mono-, di-, and trimethoxy benzylidene moieties through hydrazine linkages. First, in silico docking experiments of the synthesized compounds against Bax, Bcl-2, Caspase-3, Ki67, p21, and p53 were performed in a trial to rationalize the observed cytotoxic activity for the tested compounds. The anticancer activity of these compounds was evaluated in vitro against Caco-2, A549, HT1080, and Hela cell lines. Results revealed that two (5 and 7) of the three synthesized compounds (5, 6, and 7) showed high cytotoxic activity against all tested cell lines with IC50 values in the micro molar concentration. Our in vitro results show that there is no significant apoptotic effect for the treatment with the experimental compounds on the viability of cells against A549 cells. Ki67 expression was found to decrease significantly following the treatment of cells with the most promising candidate: drug 7. The overall results indicate that these pyrazolopyrimidine derivatives possess anticancer activity at varying doses. The suggested mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the proliferation of cancer cells.

In this research, in order to synthesize a series of ethyl 2-amino-4-benzoyl-5-oxo-5,6-dihydro-4H-pyrano[3,2-c]quinoline-3-carboxylates, a green and an efficient method is proposed through one-pot three-component reaction of substituted arylglyoxals, ethyl cyanoacetate, and 4-hydroxyquinolin-2(1H)-one in the presence of terapropylammonium bromide as a catalyst in good yields.
