The cold reaction mixture was swirled to facilitate mixing, then stirred for 75 min. Hydrochloric acid (1 N) (50 mL) was added to the reaction mixture and the aqueous mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The solvent is removed in a vacuo and water (200mL) is added to the residue and stirred for 1 hour. The resulting white solid is filtered off, washed with ethanol and dried.

The reaction was heated to reflux for 5 h. The reaction was cooled to room temperature and diluted with water (200 mL).
