Fragile cultural relics at underwater archaeological sites are difficult to preserve in situ over long time periods due to the effects of a complex and constantly changing surrounding environment. Thus, extracting the relics from water and preserving them in a controllable environment is of primary importance. In this paper, the technology of temporary reinforcement and extraction of underwater fragile relics with veratraldehyde followed by a process of secondary temporary reinforcement using polyethylene glycol (PEG) was studied. After investigating the melting temperature and permeability of PEGs with different molecular weights, we found that PEG-3000 is an excellent candidate as the secondary reinforcing agent for the extracted relics. In the laboratory, combined with veratraldehyde and polypropylene-fiber cloth as temporary underwater strengthening materials, and selected dispersed beaded jewelry and a broken three-dimensional crock as our research subject, we carried out an entire retrieval process-temporary stabilization and secondary temporary reinforcement, to systematically evaluate the technological aspects of safely excavating fragile underwater relics in the original state. After being extracted from water and subjected to secondary temporary reinforcement using PEG-3000, the beaded jewelry and broken crock retained their underwater shape and arrangement completely. The use of secondary reinforcing agent prevents the removal process of veratraldehyde and enclosed sediment from affecting the state of the relics.

The bidentate ruthenium isomers [{CH3O-C5H3N-C5H4N}RuH(CO)(PPh3)(2)]Cl (4a and 4b) could undergo similar C-O cleavage, affording product {O-C5H3N-C5H4N}RuH(CO)(PPh3)(2) (5), which reacted with HCl to generate complex [{HO-C5H3N-C5H4N}RuH(CO)(PPh3)(2)]Cl (6). These complexes were tested as catalysts for beta-alkylation of secondary alcohols with primary alcohols, and a series of beta-alkylated 1-phenylethanol derivatives were isolated in high yields.

Gold catalysts are best known for their selectivity in oxidation reactions, however, there is a promising future for gold in selective hydrogenations. Herein, the hydrogenation of several aldehydes and important bio-based chemical building blocks, namely 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), furfural and vanillin, was performed throughout the combination of Au nanoparticles with Lewis bases. The Au-amine ligand (e.g.. 2,4,6-trimethylpyridine) catalytic system could reduce the aldehyde carbonyl group selectively, without reducing alkene moieties or opening the furanic ring that occur on most traditional catalysts. Otherwise, the reduction of nitro group is preferential and the catalytic system was used for the synthesis of furfurylamines, important intermediates in the synthesis of different pharmaceuticals (e.g., furosemide), through the selective reductive amination of furfural starting from nitro-compounds. Moreover, a fully heterogeneous gold catalyst embedded in N-doped carbon (Au@N-doped carbon/TiO2) was able to perform these reactions in successive recycles without the addition of ligands, with impact in the development of a continuous flow process for biomass valorization.

A novel array double dielectric barrier discharge (ADDBD) combined with a TiO2/Al2O3-Co3O4/AC (Ti-Co) catalyst was applied to remove toluene. The effects of catalyst setting distance, catalyst combination mode, and process factors (including specific input energy, initial toluene concentration, and relative humidity) were investigated in terms of the toluene degradation efficiency (eta(t)(oluene)) and the selectivity of CO2 (S-CO2). When the specific input energy was 65 J.L-1, the initial toluene concentration was 100 mg . m(-3), and the relative humidity was 30%, the highest eta(t)(oluene) of 72% and Scot of 44% could be achieved with TiO2/Al2O3 10 cm and Co3O4/AC 20 cm downstream of the ADDBD. Based on the determination of active substances (e.g., O-3, center dot OH) and the catalyst activation mode, a synergistic effect of active substances and photon between the ADDBD and the Ti-Co catalyst was proposed for the removal of toluene. Finally, the biodegradability and toxicity of the outlet gas were evaluated, and the results showed that the outlet gas was more convenient for subsequent biopurification and less toxic to the surroundings after the treatment by the ADDBD combined with the Ti-Co catalyst. Alkylidene carbenes undergo rapid inter- and intramolecular reactions and rearrangements, including 1,2-migrations of beta-substituents to generate alkynes. Their propensity for substituent migration exerts profound influence over the broader utility of allcylidene carbene intermediates, yet prior efforts to categorize 1,2-migratory aptitude in these elusive species have been hampered by disparate modes of carbene generation, ultrashort carbene lifetimes, mechanistic ambiguities, and the need to individually prepare a series of C-13-labeled precursors. Herein we report on the rearrangement of C-13-alkylidene carbenes generated in situ by the homologation of carbonyl compounds with [C-13]-Li-TMS-diazomethane, an approach that obviates the need for isotopically labeled substrates and has expedited a systematic investigation (C-13{H-1} NMR, DLPNO-CCSD(T)) of migratory aptitudes in an unprecedented range of more than 30 alkylidene carbenes. Hammett analyses of the reactions of 26 differentially substituted benzophenones reveal several counterintuitive features of 1,2-migration in alkylidene carbenes that may prove of utility in the study and synthetic application of unsaturated carbenes more generally.

Old World (Africa) and New World (South America) arenaviruses are associated with human hemorrhagic fevers. The first highly enantioselective intermolecular Stetter reaction using simple enones is reported. A series of novel chiral BAC structures were designed and prepared. They were tested in the Stetter reaction with simple aldehydes and enones. The products were generated in excellent yields and enantioselectivities (up to 94% ee). Surprisingly, a substoichiometric amount of water was crucial to obtain high enantioselectivities. Chiral BACs were also shown to catalyze 1,6-conjugate addition reactions with paraquinone methides enantioselectively.
